Have similar problem with ATI R7000 videocard using gnome as my windows manager. In my case, it would seem that Gutsy Kernel / video driver, not firefox is the problem. I feel that 7.10 should be considered a Beta release. Most computer professionals would check a new Windows release for a month or two (maybe a year) before installing it on customer sites where stability is needed. We have been priviledged with very stable releases up to now.

Besides system lockups, I also get text corruption and text fields being obscured diagonally

Just waiting for the experts to spot and fix the errors

Sorry but Firefox-2 is getting near EOS and they wont be fixing anything but major issues security issues mainly. Please try to reproduce this with Firefox-3.0 if you can reproduce this bug please click on Help > Report a problem and file the bug that way.
Please feel free to file a new bug against video drivers or whatever package you think it is but firefox will not carry a fix for this
