Mozilla Thunderbird fails when clicking on email links

Bug Description

I used synaptic to install Mozilla Thunderbird.

When I change my email client to thunderbird in my 'prefered applications' and
click a mailto: link on a webpage, I get a 'profile manager' window appearing
instead of a compose window.

Is Thunderbird already running? If so that would explain it.

Yes, but it still shouldn't fail. I leave my email client open all of the time
and I shouldn't have to close it just for mailto: links to work.
