No sound heard from Intel ICH [NVidia CK8S]

Bug Description

Can't get sound to come out of my speakers.

It seems likely that there is a mixer channel which needs to be unmuted; please
try *all* of the controls, not only master and PCM.

I have tested all of those things, worked with pitti for about 35 min.

You only mentioned Master and PCM in the transcript; modern audio devices have
dozens of mixer controls. Are you sure that you tried them all?

Muting 'IEC958 Capture Monitor' resolves this issue. As a side note, this was
fixed in upstream 1.0.9rc2 (see cmi9761 ac97 codec-related fixes at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/alsa/alsa-kernel/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c?rev=1.172&view=log).

Very similar to #7286.
