Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi there,

This may well be a duplicate of one of the other Network Manager bugs, but so far I've gone through about 20 and none of them quite seem to match. Here's the deal:

I have a working wireless connection (that I'm sending this bug report through right now). Both K Wireless Assistant (wlassistant) and K Wireless Tools Pro see my device and connections fine.

Network Manager on the other hand displays the icon that says its connected to a wired network (it's not) and doesn't show any wireless networks (there are plenty). When I choose Manual Configuration it says "No Active Device" although I'm connected through an IPW2100 through Eth3 (bug 35726?).

My Specs are:
Kubuntu Gutsy 32bit (updated today)
Knetwork Manager 0.2 (not sure of the version beyond this. See below)
HP TC1100 notebook
IPW2100 wireless modem
Using a wireless g network with no authentication (atm)

UPDATE: Another wierd behaviour I'm getting is that when I choose purge/uninstall that networkmanager is listed as being uninstalled, yet continues to show in the menu and I can still run it. For this reason I'm not sure I trust the version number in adept.

I'm not seeing anywhere to attatch the various log files, so I'll try submitting the bug report and see if it lets me afterwards.

this is not a bug ... network-manager doesn't manage interfaces configured in /etc/network/interfaces ... so comment out your eth3 iface line there and you will be fine.

Changed in network-manager:
status: New → Invalid

however, knetworkconf appears to have a bug: if you disable the interface, its not getting disabled for real. So for now it appears that kde users need to manually disable interfaces in /etc/network/interfaces (using an editor). This needs to be fixed before release.

Changed in knetworkconf:
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Confirmed

Hi Alexander,

Thanks for the reply. The contents of my /etc/network/interfaces is now as below, but I'm still getting the same thing (see screenshot attatched). Connection is still working fine when I go through Kwirless Assistant. Have I commented out something incorrectly?

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0

auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth1
#iface eth1 inet dhcp

auto eth2
#iface eth2 inet dhcp

auto ath0
#iface ath0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
#iface wlan0 inet dhcp

please ensure that you have the interfaces like above ... then restart your system and if you still don't have a connection, please post your /var/log/syslog

My /etc/network/interfaces was identical to above, however this seems to have just resolved with recent updates.

Thanks for your help!

I should clarify that when I say it's resolved, I just mean that knetwork manager is seeing my networks and allowing me to connect which is what I originally filed the bug about. Since then the name of this bug has been changed to be about something else (not enabling interfaces) which I don't have the technical knowledge to know whether it's been resolved or not.

Either way, all is good on my end. If you still need any help from me with this bug then let me know, otherwise feel free to close it.
