In Qt4 apps, menus appear on wrong screen

Bug Description

Using a dual screen setup, if I place the lyx window on the second screen, any application menus pop up on the first screen, at the appropriate y position, but jammed up against its right hand side. This also happens with texmaker, and both use qt4 for rendering windows.

This bug would be better discussed with upstream. Could you try compiling latest cvs version of lyx?

If the bug is not present in latest version, we should backport the fix, or else I think it's better you report upstream personally and link in a comment here:

http://bugzilla.lyx.org/

so that you are subscribed to the bug report (I have no dual screen here). If you don't know how compile from SVN I can try providing a package on my ppa.

I'll see if I can find the time to do this.

I tried to build the lyx-devel repository, however it did not build. There was no configuration errors, no real build errors, but make just says "Nothing to be done for xxxx" for each subdirectory. Unless there is a simple fix, I'll just wait on upstream fixes. I don't have an immediate need for a working lyx (extremely slow scrolling makes it unusable, the menus are just annoying), so perhaps by the time I do it will be in better shape.

Ergosys, could you please subscribe to the upstream report, so that you can answer questions or test fixes? Can you try other qt4 applications and report if menus are displayed correctly?

Thank you for taking time to make ubuntu better.

I'm now subscribed to that bug in lyx's bugzilla. I can try other qt4 applications, but I don't know how to find one. Are there any others in the default ubuntu installation or can you suggest (preferably small) one?

You can find packages depending on qt4 in apt database using the command

apt-cache rdepends libqt4-gui

One very small such software is qrfcview, but maybe you'd have more fun asking the competitors, i.e. installing the "texmaker" package. Maybe it's better to follow up directly to the upstream bug for now.

Editing description and assigning to qt4-x11, which should be the culprit.

I've tried some qt4 applications (in feisty, using qt4 version 4.3.0), and they all show the menu always on the same screen no matter which screen the program is on. This makes it a real PITA to use qt4 apps.
