gnome-screensaver coming up when watching TV or recording

Bug Description

gnome-screensaver blanks screen when watching TV or a recording.

I have to use the keyboard, as the remote does not generate a sufficient event (Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T-500).

Basically, gnome-screensaver does its job, which I would appreciate on an LCD TV while in the menus.

But it is quite inconvenient when watching TV, a recording or a video.

Gutsy up-to-date for today, amd64

Can you speak a little more to how you have started the frontend? gnome-screensaver support is added to myth so things like this shouldn't happen. You started it from the automatic login session, correct?

frontend started automatically when the mythtv user logs in automatically from GDM.

This is the default behaviour since install.

as discussed on IRC, I tried to launch mythfrontend from a terminal.

I did that from my user, not the mythtv user, and no gnome-screensaver

When I logged off and let gdm log the mythtv user automatically, I logged in remotely:

mythtv 9305 1 0 17:17 ? 00:00:00 gnome-screensaver

You sure this is happening upon tv recording watching from within myth? Can you post the frontend log? There should be something in it regarding "Activating gnome-screensaver support" or similar.

Thomas (tgm4883) was encountering something similar but it was screen blanking not gnome-screensaver coming up.

I had the same issue and fixed it by going to the control center and starting a console.

su [account] "the account that is set to auto launch mythbuntu"

gnome-screensaver-preferences "disable the screensaver at this point."

OK, some more info:

- my "mythtv" user is logged-in automatically from GDM.
- this mythtv user is different from my normal user
- gnome-screensaver is started within the mythtv user session
- gnome-screensaver is NOT started within my normal user session
- the screensaver comes on when watching a video from within Mythvideo (driving mplayer)
- the screensaver comes on when watching Live TV
- the screensaver comes on when watching recorded TV
- as X is not monitoring the remote's event device, using the remote does nothing, I have to use the keyboard to restore the picture
- the screensaver does not come on or the screen does not blank once I have killed the gnome-screensaver process from a remote terminal session
- now that I have a proper mythfrontend log (many thanks!), I can see no mention of gnome-screensaver support anywhere

I am using Gutsy, an install from a Tribe CD in July, following the ubuntu wiki instructions, kept up-to-date everyday. It has all the mythbuntu branding.

As my setup was using the apparently old style mythtv user, it is difficult for me to su and run the preferences manually.

I hope this helps clarifying my current experience.

Nico,

Thanks for all the valuable information here. You hit upon every question I
was going to ask. One more request though, and I think we can then
hopefully sort things out finally. Can you post that frontend log that was
made (/var/log/mythtv/frontend.log).

Thanks!

Here is a log file.

I used mcc somewhere in the middle to change the gnome-screensaver preferences.

Yes, my TV reception is crap, to the point where it is badly affecting my MPEG2 DVB-T streams...

It looks like in your log the Gnome Screensaver support wasn't activating.
The order things are launched is changed in the beta with Xfce. Can you
verify that things work as expected with the beta?

Mario, can you clarify ?

I'm up-to-date wrt packages, so I'm at beta level.

Nevertheless, i still have the openbox thing, not Xfce.

Please do not ask me to reinstall from scratch, the box is in prod !

I'm getting the screen saver coming on when I'm watching videos. Doesn't come on when I'm watching live tv or watching tv recordings. Just when I watch things from the "Watch Videos" section. This is with a clean beta installation and I haven't done any reconfiguring of anything in xfce.

pdgradon,
What video player are you using? Mplayer by default doesn't turn off screensaver. Internal does. Xine i'm not sure off hand.

I'm using mplayer. That's what it's set to use by default in Video Settings -> Player Settings. I just went out to the xfce desktop and turned off the screensaver there.

All you needed to do was put this in ~/.mplayer/config :

stop-xscreensaver=1

This should be fixed for tv and recordings. Mplayer has a minor issue that should be resolved in the near future though.
