I have the same problem. Laptop is toshiba p100-429. I upgraded to v3.80 bios, the DSDT supplied by the system now needs no patching to get it to the same state as the guide gets you to, but there is still no sound.

My dmesg|grep ACPI :

I'm in the same boat as you. I've never seen the DSDT workaround actually
work. I've created a new DSDT.dsl file by:

   - extracting and reverse engineering the original DSDT.dsl from the
   bios
   - changing variables that look like _T_0 to T_0
   - changing some strings that look like "*PNP0C14" to "PNP0C14"
   - and editing the all important "Linux" section to look like the
snippet below (other people have modified their .dsl slightly differently,
but this approach looks the safest to me).
   - then I create a new DSDT.aml file (iasl -tc DSDT.dsl)
   - I copy the file over to the initial ramfs location (cp
DSDT.aml/etc/initramfs-tools/)
   - and create a new ram disk (mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-
   2.6.22-13-generic)

The kernel log says it loads the DSDT.aml file when I reboot, but the sound
doesn't work. Apparantly this workaround used to work in Fiesty Fawn. I was
on FF and the workaround didn't work for me. When I tried asking about it
(and created a bug) I was told I had to be on GG to report this bug. I
switched, and found that we're all experiencing this problem. I don't know
when FF stopped working - some people have reported that the fix used to
work. I should also say that I have BIOS 4.0 for the laptop (I upgraded
recently).

So, if you want sound, you can boot your laptop by adding "acpi=off" at the
end of the kernal options in GRUB (just press E to edit on next reboot to
try it temporarily). BUT, when ACPI is off, it can lead to things like your
CPU overheating I am told. I think this can wreck your hardware. My machine
froze after a while.

I'm just waiting (more like praying) for a FIX. PLEASE PLEASE.... I want
SOUND!!

I would even pay money for the fix.

Enough of my rant. (Probably more than you needed to know)

Luis, the point is to stick with ubuntu .

i got it working with feisty a while ago by doing that DSDT.aml edit thing
on the gentoo forums (not the wiki link). from the looks of it we have to
make a DSDT.aml for each model in the series. there even is a site that
keeps track of them , so if you make one then you can submit it there for
other people.
it requires you to rename some variables in a file , not all the edit
instructions worked for me, i started removing edits untill i found the ones
causing the problem. tried to get it perfect but failed. after renaming the
variables you need to compile it. i found the instructions were really easy.
i think 3 commands or so.
It finally ran with acpi=on (that means battery stuff works), my sound is
working (no volume problems, no hda-intel stuff needed) and cpu fan works,
but when i do 3d stuff then the lappy crashes after a while and gets very
very hot. (gpu fan not running? no compiz, no games like wow. at least not
longer than +-20min ) another thing that is a problem is the +-20s delady
on bootup while giving some pci error. one of the newer ubuntu kernerls
makes the delay less but not the error.

I have not tried again and i have not updated to the 4.0 firmware in case it
gets worse like it did with this dreaded 3.0 ( vista ready ) update .

does gutsy still have this problem? anyone?

What you are saying was already discussed above. I guess almost everyone here has got it working with feisty. Feisty is NOT the problem, the problem is GUTSY.
For some reason gutsy does NOT accept the DSDT.aml file in intramfs, or MAYBE I don't know how to do it the right way. I've installed Feisty on around 6 toshibas with the same problem with with no single issue, but again... that is FEISTY.
I 'm NOT telling anyone to leave ubuntu, ... ubuntu is the distro I love most, but FACTS are FACTS and sound does not work in Gutsy.
I invite you to read a little since the begining of this bug.. some people has been able to have sound doing some hacks but with an earlier kernel, but some of us were not so lucky.
When you upgrade to gutsy, then you can give us some feed back, in the mean time... I'll continue shouting about a fix to this issue.

Gutsy seems to accept the patched DSDT in the initram. You can simply check this by running the patched version and do a cat /proc/acpi/dsdt > dsdt.dat, iasl -d dsdt.dat (which we all love ;-)
And of course the size of /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-... changes

I switched back to the feisty kernel 2.6.20-16-generic as recommended before.

Better hardware support should be way more important to Ubuntu. The distro can be easiest-to-use and shiny as gold, but no one would use it if it runs just crippled (or perform serious hacks as we all did - no greenhorn can do this, and me don't want it)

Hello guys, I'm from #134734. Well after reading your comments, I think you're wrong when some of you are saying that the DSDT doesn't get loaded. The dmesg says it was and as said before, if you disassemble the current DSDT, you're getting your modified version. So here the problem is not.

According to some people, the new version of the kernel doesn't ship with hda intel as part of the kernel but is kind of "separated" (maybe in linux-ubuntu-modules?) and this seems to be our problem.

Anyway, what's fun is I reverted my DSDT today (deleted DSDT file in /etc/initramfs-tools/) and added a boot option with acpi=off (acpi_osi=!Linux seems anyway useless, my dmesg reports that "_OSI(Linux) has" already "been disabled" because it detected a Toshiba P100) and sound works (yeah no surprise) but I also noticed that the supplementary errors lots of us get since Gutsy at boot-time about are also gone :

(these ones)
[ 28.596140] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 7 of bridge 0000:00:1c.0
[ 28.596233] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 8 of bridge 0000:00:1c.0

[ 28.596831] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 9 of bridge 0000:00:1c.2

So there is definitly a problem with memory allocation and PCI and it might explain why sound can't work on our machines... maybe?

I'd noticed that the DSDT.aml was detected at boot time but assumed that it was not being (sort of) recognized.
My workaround in mandriva was made winth NO custom DSDT.aml file just FYI. And I've tried with the Gutsy LiveCD with no avail also.
Now, according to kernel.org mailing lists (saw it somewhere) this is already fixed in kernel 2.6.22.9 (I guess) but you must upgrade to BIOS v3.80 or later.
I will install Gutsy again and will make 2 changes in the kernel command line (NO acpi=off) without installing my custom DSDT.aml. I'll even brake my lsystem if necessary with all the fixes suggested above by Bernardo and some other guy. If this does not work, I'll just wipe Gutsy and remain with Suse and /or Mandriva

6. Use "Envy" from http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html to configure the latest Nvidia drivers for this computer

That's it.

I tried this, but I must have done something wrong or it doesn't work for my computer. Or, do I have to follow step 6 and use "envy" before the sound can work at all, or is it just to configure the already-working sound? Either way, for now this is unconfirmed on the P100-JR5.

Hi,
I tested Hardy Alpha 2 LiveCD today (kernel 2.6.24-2-generic): sound & acpi works out-of-the-box! No idea what about the nvidia temp issue because no nvidia driver on the CD (and no time for playing around ;-)

Cheers

P.S. apt kernel updates suck! I removed my dsdt files but the updates regenerate ALL initramfs... And I cannot remove the gutsy kernel without broken deps. so my old feisty patched initramfs was also replaced

I have a Satellite P100-126 (PSPAG) with known problems of GPU fan and
sound.
I have tried to use a custom DSDT but without any improvement.

Looking for a solution I have found this kernel parameter: pci=usepirqmask
Using this I have solved the problems without turning off the acpi.

BIOS 4.0, Fedora 8, kernel 2.6.23.9, alsa driver 1.0.15.

I hope can be useful to someone.

Can someone test this parameter with a sane 2.6.24-2 hardy kernel?

Is that a fix for the problem with or without the custom DSDT?

I am new here but have been tracking this bug for months now.

I have hardy alpha 5 and sound works great out of speakers, but like many others here I have nothing with the headphones. However I discovered that if I insert the headphone jack to a certain specific point (not all the way in, just slightly more than halfway) I can get normal sound. Obviously this is not practical, but interesting nonetheless.

I am a newb about audio hardware. What would cause this?

Yes my headphones and microphone do in fact work in Vista. Also, not surprisingly, the mic does not work either.

Weird issue going on here.

Hi All,

After having read though many of the comments here it seems that the original issue of sound not working has been resolved with the Hardy Alpha release. As a result I'm going to close this report. If you are experiencing new issues such as headphones or microphones not working please open a new bug report noting the specific hardware you are on. It is helpful to the development teams if bug reports target one specific issue against a specific set of hardware. Thanks.

Changed in linux:

Luis, you have been in this bug report since the start. are you as
disappointed as i am in how this got treated? im not saying we are
more important than anyone else...but come on...a little help from the
devs would at least show they give a shit about their users.

Hi Nathan...
Personally I've switched to Mandriva 2008.1 (cooker) the development branch.
I really love this distribution and it's almost sure that I will not change
it anymore (unless ubuntu comes with something very very decent IMHO).
However, Ubuntu for me is like my mother and father, I alwasy come to it
:).. I can hate it sometimes but I love it so much... I have 10 GB of my HD
just for testing one distro at a time.. in this momment I have Ubuntu and
I'm kind of happy (just sort of) but I think the Devs are not getting
motivated by us (toshiba users).
If I'm disapointed?... Yes, of course!!! You wouldn't believe I'm still
using dapper in 2 machines 'cause edgy and feisty don't like those boxes...
but that's not a real problem because dapper is a LTS distro and I will
stick to it until it's dead..
if Hardy is going to be LTS (which I believe it will) and if this distro
likes my machines... I WILL install it on'em (off course)... and will
continue in ubuntu forums, even if I don't use it, .. that does not mean I
don't like it.. I will continue promoting it... it's a fantastic
distro...and the most important thing... if Toshiba continues with their
"Only M$ Softwre" Policy.... then my next laptop will be a Lenovo or Asus
... then I can play with 3 or 4 distros at the same time...
I do not think that Devs give a damn about us... what I think is that they
don't use toshiba laptops... and in the other hand... 6 months from one
release to rnext one, seems to be too much for them... I know that the
technology is running very quick, but still I think they can implemnt new
changes in the same distro.... for me.. they simply go too fast that they
don't have time to release a "stable" version.. At least since 5.04, which
MO has been a very stable release, I've not seen something better.

Cheers

Luis

PS.. Devs, there is nothing personal against you, in fact I have a lot of
respect for your work

Yes of course I have respect for the devs work as well, i just think
that the time they spend working need to be better organized or the
development/bug teams need better organized.

I too am running Mandriva 2008 on note toshiba, it is a great distro
and only has a few things im not fond of. I built a new intel quad
core and am running gusty on here, everything works fine with the MSI
P35Neo2, ati card and the quad. I am about to try alpha six on the
Toshiba, I hope it works but i still think I may stay with mandriva at
least until hardy is a few months old and some bug are worked out of
it (we all know there will be bugs, let just hope they get them fixed
this time).

I think you could be right, none of the devs use Toshiba notebooks.
But honestly Toshiba notebooks are some of the most common laptops on
the market so they really should find someone to help test :)

Asus notebooks are great, i almost bought one a few months ago. They
make one (not sure the model) that has 2 separate HDD's totaling
320GB. The one thing i would watch out for is all the dolby
stuff...that is sure to cause problems with driver support (i would
think). Another option you have is an MSI notebook....these are sweet!
i would love to have one. Toshiba as far as i know has no plans on
supporting anything linux in the future, they are a "windows only"
company just like you already know. When i bought my notebook I didnt
really have the intention of running linux on it, even though I
already did on my desktop. I would suggest to anyone that is buying a
laptop for linux use NOT to buy Toshiba and if you have a shiny new
one try to sell it and get something better. Ill tell everyone right
now that a company that does not "support it users" (running what OS
they want) i will and no one else should support. On top of this I
have had really big problems with Toshiba customer support...i just
really dont like this company and dont plan on buying anything from
them ever again...just how i feel though.

sorry to bitch and ramble, i have to do it somewhere :)

cheers,

nate :)

@Devs... sorry for finding this place an atractive and "warm" site to post
comments not straight related to the bug, but to Toshiba users, and thanks a
lot for not bitching us out and supporting all our personal and; sometimes,
off topic remarks.
Saiid that....

@Nate.... Thanks a lot for sharing your comments.

I could never agree more...

This is our feeling, but sure they are organized (their own way off course).
We are just a minority of laptop users and just remember that they pay more
attention (and concern) to the certified laptops . And I only know about
some Dell, Lenovo and Asus models. Toshiba itself, has granted us this
situation.

I too am running Mandriva 2008 on note toshiba, it is a great distro

I did'nt mention but I also have gutsy and feisty installed on 2 boxes in my
office and they are running fine, but as u said, a few months later after
hardy is sort'a stable they will be upgraded, I will not run any risk 'cause
they have a tough charge of work in my office
AS I said, I'm running mandriva 2008.1 on my laptop, Mandriva seems to like
Toshiba laptops a lot. With the new 2.6.24 kernel, I don't need to boot with
the "acpi_osi=!LInux" parameter, my GPU is very cold. I must say that I have
some minor issues with my nvidia GC after the last update but I believe this
will be fixed some time before the final release if not before RC2 (this is
one thing I like from mandriva devs) I believe some of them are using
Toshiba laptops 'case they tend to be very fast to fix toshiba related bugs.
This release is very stable I must say, minor issues like the amsn mic
cannot be configured but this is not such a deal. the 18 th of this month
RC2 will be available, I suggest u to try it and use the powerpack theme, it
is so beautifull that people here in my office is requesting me to move to
mandriva ;=), oh and the fonts.. sharp and nice when you select the Subpixel
LCD and light parameter in the fonts setting tab. u don't need to do anymore

I think you could be right, none of the devs use Toshiba notebooks.

Not only mmost of the common, but have been sharing the firs sales positions
for more than a decade :).

Happy to report that the headphone jack now works just fine on my Toshi. Was fixed in Intrepid and remains working in Jaunty. It should be noted that those of you who were experiencing the problem weren't actually getting "no sound" from the jack, but instead the output was set to digital (spdif) when it should have been analog. Weird, huh? It's kind of cool that Toshi gives you a jack that can output in either format but I don't think there's a proper way to control it from Linux. In any case my headphones are working fine now. In fact, I'm using both the audio in and out with Rakarrack to use my Toshi as an effects board for my electric guitar. Rock on with Ubuntu!
