Fisher what makes you think this is a gutsy issue? is it the same toolbar that was used in feisty? We also cant support google apps as they are non-free. without google tool bar gutsy firefox can open more than 2 tabs right? if so the conclusion would be this is a googletoolbar problem not so much ubuntu firefox. but i will leave it open for now. Please grab an strace of the issue and attach it to this bug report please.

@John Vivirito
i use same version on all configurations 3.0.20070525L... same version of vanilla firefox work well for me on gutsy. It can be one of patches cosing this issue .... if you can say which of them possible can be... i'll try to test is, but not all, i do not have a lot of time to do this.

The problem still exists in the new 2.0.0.8 release for gutsy. I deleted my ~/.mozilla directory and only installed the google toolbar in the new configuration. As soon as I open a third window firefox freezes. With the 2.0.0.8 version from mozilla.com everythings works fine.

I get the following strace output of the gutsy version:

Google Toolbar does not support IA-64, so in this message I confirm the bug happens on 32 bits. Steps to repro: start FF, hit control N twice.

Linux m70 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Also verified that Mozilla.org build 2.0.0.8 does not have the issue.

Also occurs in 32 bit (i386) Gutsy. Pretty consistent and easy to confirm. With google toolbar enabled, when you attempt to open a third window, firefox hangs and sucks up most of the cpu cycles. With google toolbar disabled, you can open as many windows as you want. This did not occur in Feisty. Started only when upgraded to Gutsy. (For what it is worth, which is not much, if you substitute in GoogleBar from the firefox addons site, enable GoogleBar, disable stock google toolbar, then the problem does not happen). I suppose everyone is now going to start .... Ubuntu versus Mozilla versus Google....who owns the problem......just....like....please....

Exactly... I'm afraid of finger pointing between ubuntu and gtb.

I began a thread on GTB support:
http://groups.google.com/group/FFToolbar-Group-Bugs/browse_thread/thread/d32b039cb2f92ff5?hl=en

It's really looking like a quirk in the Gutsy FF build, though.

I can confirm this bug in the ubuntu version of firefox (on two different machines, since early in the gutsy cycle and persisting in the release), and it disappears with the mozilla.org version. Perhaps it is "really" a google toolbar bug: perhaps google toolbar makes unjustified assumptions that happen to work on the official firefox. Or perhaps not. Anyway, from a user perspective it is certainly a ubuntu bug, and it makes me understand why the firefox people are reluctant to let others use their trademark.

I'm seeing a similar problem here. Kubuntu gutsy.
firefox hangs with this system call:

    futex(0xa75fdbd8, FUTEX_WAIT, 20644, NULL)

The screen freezes, no redrawing.
It happens to me most often while on youtube.com
When clicking on random video 'play' buttons (there's embedded macromedia flash there) it hangs and never comes back.

The only way out is a 'killall -9 firefox-bin' (SIGKILL) and restarting firefox.

Next time it happens, I'll try to get a stack trace.

I actually suspect that the Google Toolbar is simply exposing an underlying problem, which I'm guessing has to do with scripting. Even without the toolbar, there are a couple of sites I visit regularly that simply 'don't work' with ANY Mozilla browser on Ubuntu. The work fine using Firefox on Fedora or Windows.

At least one of the sites is using .Net, and I think a lot of AJAX. I get a really nasty ASP error when I try to use one of the site's functions, which works fine on Fedora.

I've noticed that sites that use a lot of scripting take forever to load, and sometimes never completely load.

If you look at the history of this bug it has been reported thoroughly during gutsy. The response has been denial and finger pointing at Google, but Ubuntu has the only distro of FF (now 3.0 too) where this behavior happens. You're totally in denial, John Vivrito. metaph3r posted a perfect strace of the infinite loop, reporudicble anywhere. Evidently, nobody even bothered to regress this for Hardy.

So I''ll allow others to burn time documenting this bug In Hardy, I'm installing the Firefox Linux build which works.

This has been an issue ever since and from what i have seen it is googletool bar that is the issue. from what this states just tells me it is google tool bar as well as knowing and trying to get it to work on firefox and they havent touched it in a while upstream (google tool bar devs not firefox) We will not work around this issue unless we have proof that it is firefox and nothing else. So far on this bug report i havent seen anything that states it is firefox.

I get the following strace output of the gutsy version:

...
[pid 7881] gettimeofday({1193118842, 339086}, NULL) = 0
[pid 7881] futex(0x8098ad8, FUTEX_WAKE, 1) = 0

[pid 7881] futex(0x8087f40, FUTEX_WAIT, 775, {2, 69847616}) = -1 ETIMEDOUT (Connection timed out)
[pid 7881] gettimeofday({1193118844, 410149}, NULL) = 0
[pid 7881] futex(0x8098ad8, FUTEX_WAKE, 1) = 0
[pid 7881] gettimeofday({1193118844, 410524}, NULL) = 0
[pid 7881] gettimeofday({1193118844, 410671}, NULL) = 0
[pid 7881] clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, {1193118844, 410822128}) = 0
[pid 7881] futex(0x8087f40, FUTEX_WAIT, 777, {3, 657848872}) = -1 ETIMEDOUT (Connection timed out)
...

the above point to the tool bar as clock is not controled by firefox at all. I cant remember if the tool bar does or did. I gave up a few months ago since they didnt touch this issue at all. Please file this upstream with your backtraces and please let them tell us its not them and why. Please link the upstream report to this bug report just add link to a comment. I will be glad to look at it again.
Thanks

It would be very nice to be warned when installing the google toolbar add-on (especially since the problem description is understandable to anyone).
