comics! does not show comics I want to see

The reason that you have to choose between two identical strips is
because of the way that the applet has to guess what part of the XML
feed actually contains the comic. For some comics, the link to image is
not even present in the feed, but you have to download an HTML page and
parse it.

Have you tried selecting both strips from the configuration program? If
one does not work, the other one might.

With the Comics! applet, it is possible to select the comic of a
different date. Simply right click on the comics, select "Go to" (the
actual wording of this menu item might differ; I use a Swedish version
of Gnome) and click on the date you want to read.

The ability of the Dilbert applet to download a higher resolution image
is unfortunately not present in Comics!. The RSS feed that the newer
applet uses only provides low resolution images.

This is fixed in rev. 1494 and available in the new testing PPA.

I refer to the main point of this bug report that some comics are not shown or can't be installed. Some of the preinstalled comics were outdated. Alas feeds are changing from time to time and the URL or image index has to be updated.

Adding new comics shoud have always worked. As Moses Palmér pointed out you may have to try both strips if the applet lets you choose between two. The applet previously didn't download the comic immediately after adding it, that's why it may have seemed that it didn't add it at all.

As Mark Lee already wrote the other points you made would be separate bugs. I'll close this particular bug report for the main point as it's in the title. The other things would be Wishlist items, they are currently not supported, like a higher resolution image (this needs general support in the applet and plugins for each website with highres images), different date chooser or date chooser for comics that are not provided as feeds.
