Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

The following only happens if "Keep previews of minimized windows" is active in the compiz "Workarounds" plugin.

Instead of not displaying a window, 'empathy -h' leaves an invisible window on the desktop. Sometimes the empathy window flashes before becoming invisible. This is not a brick-wall invisible window as in previous unity bugs; this one can be moved and interacted with, and even displays tooltips and drag-and-drop objects (i.e. contacts). The empathy launcher is not displayed. Selecting "Chat" from the messaging menu restores the visibility of the window and makes the launcher appear.

I can't actually reproduce this one at all. Is it 100% reproducible for you?

Even I can't reproduce this one. Can you check if it occurs with latest updates?

Yup, 100% reproducible even after the latest compiz updates.

There must be something in my compiz settings that is causing this (not the stuff in the "place" plug-in, where I was trying and failing to get empathy to open in desktop 7; I removed this and it still happens), because I can reproduce this on my laptop but not on my desktop. I'll try to find what exactly is the difference.

summary: - Running empathy -h in unity results in an invisible contact list
+ Running empathy -h results in an invisible contact list if "keep
+ previews of minimized windows" is active

In fact this option causes another problem with minimized windows under unity: minimizing a window will not unfocus it, so minimize+click on application launcher will not restore the minimized window - clicking on the desktop first allows one to restore the window.

Anyway, this looks like something to work on after release, since this option is off by default.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
