Bug Description

When booting (after kernel selection in grub2) the system is freezed. The screen became black and system seems freezed, but keyboard responds. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 followed by Ctrl+Alt+F7 a stack dump will be showed. Please refer to the dmesg_from_boot_to_stack_dump.log for more informations.

The PC is an Acer TimeLineX 4820TG
Ubuntu version is Natty Beta2 64 bits

Problem is reproducible :
1/ WithOUT power supply cable plugged, power on the Acer TimeLineX 4820TG under Ubuntu Natty Beta2 64 bits
2/ Under the grub kernel selection, choose 2.6.38-8
3/ Login and choose shutdown
4/ After PLUG the power supply cable and switch on the laptop
5/ Under the grub kernel selection, choose 2.6.38-8
6/ The system will freeze some seconds later
7/ Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 followed by Ctrl+Alt+F7 show a stack dump.
8/ Unplug the power cable, press Alt+Syst+B to reboot. Problem will not happen

Please note that at point 1/ if you switch on the machine with the power supply cable plugged, and at point 4/ unplug it, the problem will also happen!

Feel free to contact me in order to make further test. It's a regression, the problem doesn't happen under the 2.6.38-7 kernel.

This also affects my Lenovo Y460 0633.

Note that it will boot normally unplugged if booted from an older kernel.

yes Adam it's for sure a regression, the problem doesn't happen under the 2.6.38-7 kernel.

Problem happens also on Lenovo Ideapad Y560. And +1 for regression (older kernel did not have this problem).

marmotte31, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please post the results following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
