same situation here, same kernel versions, also nvidia, amd64...
how do i produce the fancy list of attachments?

nearly downgraded right away but then noticed that on linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic 2.6.38-8.42 Ubuntu Session runs fine in Safe Mode. Also, as now tried, 2.6.35 works, too.

I have exactly the same problem with the same kind of hardware.
gigabyte p35 ds4, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, nvidia 8800 GTS 512 (G92 chipset)
The kernel 2.6.35 works

Since I have updated the nvidia driver to 270.41.19 (using x swat ppa) everything work like a charm with 2.6.38 kernel

Alexey, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Christopher,

I downloaded 12.04 image (ubuntu-12.04-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso) but when I
tried to boot it on my laptop
it crashed with kernel panic (hardware is the same as in issue below).
I thought it might be an issue with my usb flash drive however I
successfully booted 12.04 on pc with amd processor.
So I can't neither confirm the bug nor decline it.

Please tell me if there is anything I can do (maybe provide you with some
logs or sys info) to help with this issues.

Thanks,

Alexey

I run that kernel module (20110915) fine on ubuntu 12.04. What I could use is a confirmation (!).

Check the vhba version to see if it is not an old one:
dpkg -l vhba-dkms

Then post the new crash message here. If it doesn't read "vhba_ctl_read" it's not the same bug.
