Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:
1- Enter suspend mode (I use pm-suspend).
2- Once the powerlight is pulsating, press the power button to resume from sleep.

Expected result:
- System resumes successfully where it left off.

Actual result
- System powers on but is unresponsive, no display or backlight, and no response to the keyboard, unable to switch to a text console, only solution left is to reboot by holding the power button.

On this system, suspend/resume works fine with the Maverick 2.6.35-series kernel (tested 2.6.35-28.49).

I also tested this mainline kernel:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-image-2.6.39-999-generic_2.6.39-999.201104080911_i386.deb

This one still fails, with the originally described behavior.

Assigning to Platform QA for them to triage.

I will nominate for Natty, as this seems to be a regression

Daniel, were you using the binary drivers, or the nouveau drivers?

Hi,

the system is using the nouveau driver, as installed by default with Natty:

(II) NOUVEAU(0): Manufacturer: SEC Model: 5443 Serial#: 0
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Year: 2008 Week: 0

this is from lspci:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 9200M GS] [10de:06e8] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M G] [10de:0866] (rev b1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

I tried installing the proprietary drivers but they segfault when trying to initialize the display. I'll update if I manage to get them installed.

I think I might be affected by the same bug.

Last time my Dell XPS M1330 suspended, when I woke it up it resumed at first, but after a few seconds it stopped responding and went back to sleep mode despite being connected to AC power supply. I tried waking it up a few times more. It took about 4 tries before it finally worked as intented.

Daniel, can you try this with Oneiric, please?

Tested, behavior with Oneiric is the same as originally reported :(

Running this kernel:

Linux version 3.0.0-5-generic (buildd@rothera) (gcc version 4.6.1 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-2ubuntu2) ) #6-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 12 05:14:17 UTC 2011

I'll wait until cking's diagnostic tools are working on Oneiric and hopefully I'll be able to submit better debugging info.

marking as duplicate of 754711 as they seem similar enough, it's the same make and model of system, only difference is a different model of NVidia GPU, and they are behaving exactly the same as of kernel 3.0.
