Bug Description

When I installed Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, cpu fan started to stress (not so much, but like 10.10 would stress when cpu reaches 60-65 C, like heavy usage of flash etc..) and it gets quite noisy, even when laptop is idle.

Thanks for the link, but the problem is that in /proc/acpi directory there isn't folder named thermal_zone, so I can't run this command "cd /proc/acpi/thermal_zone && watch grep temperature */*".

Btw switching to proprietary ati drivers it kept a little bit quiet.

I have also met this bug.

I have installed kubuntu 11.04 and found my cpu fan always running. It is always running at the same speed.

I tried to make my cpu 100% running, and my cpu temperature goes to 85C but the cpu fan is still running at that speed. It seems that the cpu fan runs at the speed between the fastest and stop, and never changes.

Probably not really needed, but I can confirm this the same problem (upgrade from Kubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, /proc/acpi/thermal_zone is missing, fan spins at high speed, and CPU still gets throttled (/sys/devices/system/cpu0/thermal_throttle/core_throttle_count shows not 0) due to overheating).
The fans slows down when I slow down the CPUs by doing a simple

echo 931000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq

for all CPUs (I got 8).

That means:
Fan control works somehow.
/proc/acpi/thermal_zone makes it difficult to check the temperature.
Seems CPUs are kept busy too much somehow since the upgrade.

Hardware: Dell Vostro 3700 (Intel i7, quad core, nVidia video).

For all those who don't like noisy notebooks, my workaround (attached)

Small script to display the CPU frequencies the CPU will use and the number it was throttled due to overheating.
I use it a lot to set frequencies and verify it this way. And when the machine gets hot, I can quickly see if the CPUs were throttled.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/756472 says that the Linux kernel since 2.6.37 has no /proc/acpi/thermal_zone, and instead it's now moved into sys:

# cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
73500

That is consistent with what sensors shows (+73.0 degreed Centigrade).

That solves the /proc/acpi/thermal_zone problem, but the CPU is still kept too busy since 11.04.

Hi, rather than just add a "me too", I thought I'd tell you what I've found with this same bug and a (kind-of) workaround. Perhaps it'll help someone far smarter than myself solve this bug.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite l300 with a pitiful 2 gigs of ram. Intel Celeron dual core jobbie (i think) that ambles along at about 2.6 gigahertz.

I boot up into Ubuntu 11.04, and as soon as my processor heats up the fan kicks in at full speed to cool it down, then continues at that speed.

I put the computer into suspend (and the fan goes off), and upon resume it behaves in a normal fashion i.e. spinning at variable speeds depending on the processor load.

It [the fan] does not, however, turn off completely, but it does run at a low enough speed to only produce an amenable 'hum'.

Perhaps this will prove an unorthadox workaround for similarly afflicted users.

Edgaras Apsega, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagementASPM a patch has been issued to address heating. Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
