Bug Description

Raid is accessed through PDC chip set. Worked fine until upgade to 2.6.38-7.39kernel or installed with same. Boot now fails due to raid partition installed on not found - true for both upgrade and fresh install for that kernel. Live session of same kernel works because file system is loaded from usb key. So loaded all raid access seems normal (ie gparted, nautilus etc.) This is a serious regression that prevents booting Natty on at least raid 0 as well as raid5 or raid10, May be bootable on raid 1.

My further testing of Natty is futile until bug is fixed! The attached bug data was generated bu running the 3/26/11 live image - which is the only way to load a complete system. The problem is reproducible on my raid setup with any fresh install. I haven't tested a kernel rollback yet and probably won't with tax deadline looming.

A synopsis of my test hardwre:10.10 Maverick w/grub2/Mint10 & Natty installed on 2x160gb raid0, Gigabyte AMD MB, AMD 64x4 CPUs at 3.2GHz, 4 GB ram, HD5770 ATI video, dual boot win7 on 64gb ssd and 640gb SATA.

Also note: Neither grub-unstall nor update-grub identify and add other OS's in raid partitions to grub.cfg. I mounted them to see if that would make any difference - nope. This could be a bug against grub 2 except that it first showed up with the latest kernel update (2.6.38-7.39)

This is so basic I feel like an idiot. For some unknown reason dmraid was removed from my updated system which had it from inception, and never included in the latest fresh install. Needless to say, without dmraid both the latest upgrade and fresh install are not bootable. I fixed it by installing dmraid to the updated system while running on the 2.6.38-7 kernel. It now boots and runs normally on the latest kernel.

I seemed to be able to access all my raid partitons with an earlier kernel without dmraid? Grub-probe would not however locate any of the other raid systems in any of the other raid partitions (same with grub-update).

This does explain why the system droped to an initramfs at boot. The system could not find itself (the UUID of the RAID drive installed to) when booting transitioned to the ramfs.

That should be "running on the 2.6.38-6 kernel" in the first par above.
