Hi there, Im not sure I know what to do exactly. Perhaps I answered wrongly
on the bug report saying the bug was reproducible. I thought it was because
I can make the problem occur at will, meaning I can put the computer into
suspend or hibernate and it will generate the problem. However I have to
force a reboot by holding down the power button as I cannot login again from
hibernate or suspend. Once the computer reboots everything is back to
normal, so I dont know if i can "see" the bug as its happening.

Hi There, Thanks, I attached the named files. Just before I performed a suspend. I tried wake up the computer and the fan started and the disk light flashed a little. I pressed the power button once, then I tried to see what happened if I pressed the arrow down key a few times thinking it may be that its just the display thats not working and i wouldnt have to force a shutdown. Nothing happened so I held down the button and rebooted the system,
Thanks for your efforts, I look forward to helping however I can to work on this.

should I space acpi=off from queit splash or the code before it? or should
there be no spaces between anything?
I tried with spaces but now suspend doesn't activate at all, weather I close
the lid or click on suspend.
Thanks alot for your help,
Michael

I made the change with a space on either side. It doesnt respond to suspend
now. It works in windows though, if thats any indication of software or
hardware problems.
Do you think a new clean install of Ubuntu would fix any of the prolems?

Hello, I have the same issue and have not found a solution.
On ubuntu 9.04 I did not have this problem. I did a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04, now if the laptop suspends then I wake it up, the screen does not turn on. The lights flash as if the computer woke up but I cannot ping it ( it is connected over wireless ) from another computer.
I rebooted adding acpi=off and that prevented the computer from suspending at all just as the reporter has stated.
I will attach my logs as well.
Thanks for trying to find a solution.

Hello
1)I followed the debugging suspend from your link
After adding "no_console_suspend" in place of "quiet splash", booting, going to tty1 (ctrl-alt-f1) and typing
setfont /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz
sudo pm-suspend

the laptop suspended but I had the same results when waking it up.
I held down the power button to turn off, then booted normally and a crash report was avaialble.
It said "the package nvidia_current failed to install or upgrade"
I closed that window and another popup "the package bcmwl-kernel-source" failed to install or upgrade"

2)I then followed the "resume-trace" debugging procedure
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

and will upload the dmesg.txt file from that now
thanks

I would also like to note that after holding the power button to shutdown, then booting. Networking is enabled and working correctly, however, after trying to wake up from a suspend, holding the power down to shutoff, then booting. Networking is disabled. I've tested this several times.

I have the same bug with 10.04 / 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic (am_64).

After I upgraded to 10.10 and then 11.04, and quickly downgraded to 10.04 LTS again by overwriting the system files during the installation process, it still had the kernel of 11.04, ie 2.6.38-8-generic am_64 in use.
With this kernel suspend and hibernate workt flawlessly.

Because I could not get the correct video drivers installed (AMD internal / ATI), I switched back to kernel 2.6.32-32-generic (am_64).

And after this the suspend and hibernate would not resume anymore, same as written above.

I tried kernel 2.6.38-8-generic with 10.04 and it still did not work. Today, I upgraded to 10.10 then to 11.04 and suspend still does not work. I'll try a fresh install of 11.04 next week.

Michael Pancoe, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Hi Christopher, Sorry it took so long to get around to this.

The problem has ceased since last release but Ive downloaded a copy of
Ubuntu 12.04 and am booting it from a usb stick to test and the suspend
doesnt activiate at all when I close the lid. Perhaps this would be
different if it was installed on the harddrive?

I also tried entering the command in terminal below and only got an error
message: *bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'*

Let me know if I can still help in any way. I love Ubuntu...
Michael

Michael Pancoe, well the computer not suspending is a different problem than this report. Let us start a new report about the problem of it not suspending, and we will keep this report for the display not turning on after suspending. In the Precise live CD, please execute the following via the Terminal and feel free to subscribe me to it:

OK Im in launchpad now about to send off the bug report, but I see nowhere
to subscribe the report to you. Should I just put your name in the summary?
