Bug Description

When my Ubuntu 10.10 system updates the kernels to 2.6.35-27.45/48 and 2.6.35-22.35, the root fs fails to mount after reboot and the init process is killed causing a Kernel panic.

This can be recreated on my system by installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my system from scratch and then using the kernel updates in the Update Manager application. I have found that the following updates all cause this error:
Complete Generic Linux Kernel
Header files related to Linux kernel version 2.6.35 (2.6.35-22.35)
Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.35 on x86/x86_64 (2.6.35-22.35)
Header files related to Linux kernel version 2.6.35 (2.6.35-27.48)
Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.35 on x86/x86_64 (2.6.35-27.48)
Generic Linux kernel headers
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.35 on x86/x86_64 (2.6.35-22.35)
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.35 on x86/x86_64 (2.6.35-27.48)
Generic Linux kernel image
Linux kernel headers for development

All of these are in my updates for Ubuntu 10.10 and cause this error.

Ben Gregory, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
