Seems slightly related to:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35502

For the worst affected (like me) who can't even boot into ubuntu 11.04 without the freeze loop, do the following:

After booting off the usb/cd drive, at the purple screen splash hit enter, then hit F6, and select radeon.modeset=0 and boot like normal, you should end up on the Ubuntu Classic Desktop, which you can then install Ubuntu with, and proceed to install the proprietary drivers to get the unity goodness.

"The patches for this bug are included in 2.6.38.3, but unfortunately will not make it into the initial release kernel. You can load 2.6.38.3 from https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/pre-proposed."

So natty will release with this bug.

I don't have got any problems now with the new kernel.
So i think that you must open up a new bug report if you have still
problems with this kernel.

Since this was my first get together with Linux i do not
remember all the steps, occurrences and details.
I do remember the "frustrated Windows user move", when I
performed a hard restart (cut the power) and tadahhh ....
everything was working fine, especially after all the updates.

I would not say it is not fixed. There are lots of different graphic cards manufactured over the years handled by that driver.
This is my experience on a HD3200 card:

On a newly installed Natty, the problem appeared about once a day. After the first kernel update that included the proposed fix I have not seen the "same" problem, just 2 times in 4 months I experienced some screen corruption which could be anything.

Ubuntu has not prompted me to report a kernel bug with the automatic reporting tool since then.

Other cards may be different, but we should say which cards still seem to have the problem.

I still get the problem on a Dell Optiplex 380 (as reported in May).
The freeze occurs with the latest Ubuntu Natty Linux kernel after gdm login when Unity seems to start.
Once the freeze occurs, I reboot the machine until it doesn't freeze. Once I get the desktop I can use it for a long time (a whole week) without any crashes/freezes: I use this PC at work and uses hibernate during lunch time and the night, and usually completely shutdown only on friday. No freeze when going out of hibernate.

I have the same problem. Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, clean installed, fully updated. Linux media 2.6.38-11-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 29 19:02:55 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux . I have configured auto-login at unity on boot.

Some times (not always but quite frequently) upon bootup, screen flickers in a rate once in about 10sec, while screen contents are partially rendered with various artifacts and distortions. Mouse and keyboard have very slow or no responsiveness.

Pressing ctrl+alt+F1 repeatedly until I manage to get to the text console, and then loggin in and runnig sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart solves the problem.

My VGA is 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] and X use the opensource RADEON driver.

Konstantinos Togias, as #24 suggested this bug is closed, you need to open a new one. Since we've got the same graphics specs here is my new Bug #809956

I've not seen this bug for a while on Ubuntu 11.10. So I'm confirming the fix.
Could someone close the bug at kernel.org?
