Bug Description

Graphics card is using Intel driver and is reported by Intel driver as Intel Arrandale. Second monitor is Dell U2410 (successfully detected by xorg and noted in /var/log/Xorg.0.log). Machine is a Fujitsu T580 laptop. When second monitor is attached, laptop screen goes blank and Dell monitor flickers with various patterns (or sometimes stays blank). Problem is 100% repeatable. There is no crash, and I can ctrl-alt-F1 to make text mode successfully appear on the laptop screen. Disconnecting external monitor, ctrl-alt-F1 and then ctrl-alt-F7 (or F8, depending) successfully restores X on my laptop screen every time.

Problem does NOT occur if I boot with the kernel from package linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic.

Problem DOES occur if I boot with the kernel from package linux-image-2.6.38-5-generic.
Problem DOES occur if I boot with the "mainline" kernel from linux-image-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201102260905_amd64.deb (found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-image-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201102260905_amd64.deb ).

Problem occurs whether or not I am running a window manager.

Problem occurs with both the xorg package versions from maverick and from natty.

Thanks for your help.

sorry, the first two attachments named "grep kernel /var/log/syslog" are from my entire syslog, over many boots, and with a bunch of usb devices attacked, including an unused displaylink device. attachment #5 is only the current boot, with many of the usb devices (including the displaylink) not attached (problem still occurs)

note: the bug occurs whether the metapackages linux-generic and linux-image-generic are the maverick or natty versions, as long as the kernel image that was actually booted is 2.6.38

The same problem in ubuntu classic.

Ubuntu classic (No effect), however, does NOT have this problem.

Ubuntu 10.10 will automatically disable compiz when I attached external monitor.

Ubuntu 11.04 can only enable or disable compiz before login, it can't be changed after login.

Confirmed for 945GM Intel graphiccard on a Thinkpad X60. Never had an issue with Ubuntu 10.10
Everything works fine as long as the 2nd Monitor has same or less resolution than 1st monitor.

Same here, never had an issue with Ubuntu 10.10, I could attach my second monitor just fine whenever I wanted (booted or not, the screen would just adjust itself to the amount of monitors present when I plugged/unplugged it). Since 11.04 I can't have a nice image with two monitors on, whether I plug the screen before I boot of after... or whatever. I have a Windows partition on my computer and my second monitor works fine when I am booted on it, so Ubuntu's the problem.

Bayle:
is this an issue with both the VGA and HDMI port? If only the VGA port is affected, it could be bug 614238 - Seth Forshee recently added test kernels to that bug.

Bayle Shanks, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
