Bug Description

Hi,
I hit this solid kernel crash; the display flipped back to the terminal with the oops (picture attached),
no keyboard activity, wouldn't ping, and the sound was looping the last few seconds of audio
(scarily 'move the bodies, No Doctor'.....)

I was playing a flash video in chromium at full screen and hit escape to switch back to windowed mode
and that's when the crash happened; this is running Natty (upto date today) on an i7-860 with a Radeon HD4350/RV710
in Kubuntu.

the backtrace attached as an image, goes

BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fffffffffffffff8
IP: kthread_data+0x10/0x20
....

wq_worker_sleeping, schedule, do_exit, oops_end, die, do_trap, do_invalid_op, ttm_bo_ref_bug+0x9, invalid_op+0x1b, ttm_bo_ref_bug_0x0, ttm_bo_ref_bug+0x9, kref_sub+0x38, ttm_bo_list_ref_sub+0x28, ttm_bo_reserve+0xe8, radeon_unpin_work_func+0x29, process_one_work+0x11d, worker_thread+0x163, worker_trhead+0x0

Unfortunately it crashed hard enough it didn't land in the logs.

I can confirm the same bug.

Ubuntu natty narwhal with

2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

Ati Radeon card with Chipset: "ATI Radeon 9600XT AR (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4152)

systems run 10-30mins and dies.

Adding this xorg.conf seems to fix the problem

I also confirm the same bug, though i filed it again from ubuntu to send all info (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/821746)

The system freezes without any of rescue method working, even the /var/crash folder is empty. There is no pattern or way to reproduce the issue. Here are two sets of log from 2 instances in last week. Both show same issue "BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at .."

Hi Sohel,
The backtrace you have in your oops is very different from the one reported on this bug; it's not the same cause.

Dave Gilbert, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Not seen this bug for a while; the machine is currently running Quantal; and I don't remember seeing this bug during the Precise series either; so it's probably worth closing.

Oiv's comment #2 maybe worth trying if anyone ever hits it again but I suspect the Radeon code has moved on a lot in the last year.
Sohel's comment #3 looks like a separate bug (different back trace).
