Bug Description

Processor is an i5 650 on motherboard Intel DH57JG. This computer worked flawlessly with 10.04.

Starting with 10.10 kernels, very early in the boot sequence (around 3 seconds in after first kernel text), computer would either hang or reset. Latest kernels have never hung but always reset.

I can work around this using nolapic (in which case only one CPU is reported) or nolapic_timer (in which case everything seems to be normal -- 4 CPUs reported).

I'm currently using 10.10 with nolapic_timer and everything seems OK. The information gathered by apport is from this status.

Today I tested 11.04 alpha2 and it still resets without nolapic_timer. Using it, however, it moves on, shows the splash ubuntu screen, but later on it begins an endless loop reporting what seems to be (scrolling very fast) a kernel panic. I think I can see something about registers.

This happens booting from a USB pen and I'm not sure how I could get a log of this boot failure. Any advice appreciated.

mosteo, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please report the results following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
