Bug Description

This happens from time to time, rather often, but not always.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Hibernate
2) Wait

The system hangs forever:
- sometimes with a completely black screen with or without a blinking cursor
- sometimes with a black screen with some (apparently non-error) messages
- sometimes with a black screen and a few error messages related to USB

I have to force power off by holding the power off button. Obviously at the next startup it won't resume, it will just fresh boot.

This can happen both when hibernating manually and when hibernating automatically because battery is low

There are reports of similar issues already; however I was told I had to open a new one and NOT mark as duplicate so that it could be reported upstream (or something like that).

I forgot to mention: once I saw the error message "not enough swap space" or something like that. However, it does _not_ show up always, onle seen it once.

Still an issue in 10.10.
It happens a lot less often (so much that I thought it had been fixed!) but it still happens from time to time.

matteo sisti sette, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
