Bug Description

I was in the process of installing updates using System Update, when it failed initially with /var/lib/pkg/status complaining about corrupt fields in the openjdk-6-jre-lib pkg. Aptitiude, Synaptics, and apt-get all failed. I tried editing the file to repair, but it would just fail on another field of the same pkg record. Finally I used a backup copy from a few days earlier, copying it to /var/lib/pkg/status and tried to re-install the same Kernel and other updates. That's when I received the /var/cache/archives/linux-image-2.6.28-generic_2.6.32-28.55_i386.deb: subprocess dpkg-deb--fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2.

I then used apt-get clean and autoclean to clear the cache, apt-get update and Aptitiude run and find no broken packages. I also can reboot, but, I have not yet tried to re-install.

I noticed some WLAN0 errors. Later I tried a wired ethernet connection and retried the update (or re-installation), which reproduced the same Kernel tar file error. I shutdown and powered down the system.

Today, I started system update to attempt to take other (security) updates. Much to my surprise, I found only Java/JRE updates and that 2.6.32-28 was installed!

$ uname -a
Linux mosteika-nx9010 2.6.32-28-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 21:21:01 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

Apparently it installed during the first update, according to file timestamps, even though System Update had its status as re-install during the second attempt:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2011-02-01 15:15 initrd.img -> boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-28-generic
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 2011-02-01 15:15 vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-28-generic

We can close this problem as it resolved itself, (see above, comment 2011-02-03).

Although, when attempting to upgrade to 10.10, I bumped into Bug# 715603, 614993 - removing xserver-xorg-video-nouveau allowed install to continue. Although, it failed at the end - cleanup and restart. After restarting, many broken packages. I'll attempt to document the problems in another bug.

                              Thanks,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue, but the failure can be caused by filesystem or memory corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a memory test. If this does resolve your bug please set its status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!
