in Sound Preferences:Input, there is no internal mic input level. Toshiba Satellite A665. Used to work, not sure what happened.

Internal microphone on Toshiba Tecra R700 worked at least until Dec 2010 (also under Lucid). Now it doesn't.
Input volume in Sound Preferences is 100% (not muted).
