Bug Description

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on a Sony Vaio VGN-FW260J. When i try to resume from hibernate, my computer restarts instead. The following error was shown just before the system shut down after i issued the hibernate command.

[157.200744] [drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* render ring head not reset to zero ctl 000000000 head 02001000 tail 00000000 start 02001000
[157.200744] [drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* render ring head forced to zero ctl 00000000 head 00000000 tail 00000000 start 02001000

However, no errors are shown when system is suspended. The behaviour of the system is same as what happens when I hibernate-the power button light blinks for suspend and system shuts down for hibernate but cannot resume.

I hibernated my system three times and can confirm that the same error is shown all three times.

Arvind S Raj, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Hello Christopher,
I just tried it in Kubuntu 11.10 and the hibernate is working fine. Perhaps someone should try it in Ubuntu 11.10 as well just to be sure the issue doesn't exist there as well. However if I suspend to RAM and start the machine again, it restarts. I'll post the rest of the data from my 11.10 machine sometime later. I thought I'd add this update.
