Bug Description

I have loaded a large picture into firefox and then suddenly the system turned into shutdown screen but nothing happened further. So after pressing the power button for 5 seconds, i rebooted the machine and looked into the log file.
At the time the system crashed there were some lines repeating errors about [drm] noveau:

Dec 11 21:56:28 vulcanus kernel: [49907.204830] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PGRAPH_ERROR - nSource: ILLEGAL_MTHD, nStatus: PROTECTION_FAULT
Dec 11 21:56:28 vulcanus kernel: [49907.204839] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PGRAPH_ERROR - Ch 1/7 Class 0x0019 Mthd 0x02fc Data 0x00000000:0x00000003

and so on. I think it was there but i can't say it exactly. And i also don't know if the picture was responsible for this.

also VLC and Virtualbox ran at the same time as firefox while this happened.

faulty.txt --> The Kernel log around the time the crash happened.

Lukas Bischof, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

thank you very much for your efforts to fix this error.
Unfortunately i can't test the new kernel because i have sold the laptop some months ago. I think after this error i have installed the proprietary nvidia driver so i can't give you further information about this.

Again, thank you very much,

a happy ubuntu user.
