Bug Description

My Rosewill RCR-IC002 card reader stopped working. It worked fine for close to 1 year. I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 1-2 months ago, but it still worked. It only stopped working <1 week ago.

I insert an SD card and nothing happens. Normally it would auto-detect and auto-mount. Following the instructions from another bug report, I tried typing "udevadm monitor" and inserting and removing the card repeatedly, and nothing happened:

$ udevadm monitor
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

Just in case:

$ cat /etc/lsb-release

I have encountered a the same problem with Ubuntu Server 11.04 64 bit on a clean install with a Alcor Micro Corp. card reader. On a previous installation of Ubuntu Server 10.04.0 64 bit the card reader worked fine. Some where between 10.04.1 and 10.04.2 it stopped working. Yesterday I had it working after following these instructions:

modprobe usb_storage
echo usb_storage >> /etc/modules

Today it is not working. The server is shutdown every night and booted in the morning. I have run the modprobe usb_storage command and still nothing.

levicivita, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
