Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

On a Maverick (ubuntu 10.10) system (using OpenOffice 3.2.1-7), when I try to open a .ppt file containing audio, the slides show, but the sound doesn't play. Otherwise sound works on this system. If I take the same .ppt file and open it on a Lucid (ubuntu 10.04) system (using OpenOffice 3.2.0-7), the sound plays properly.

Maybe this is a regression in OpenOffice?

Is it possible for you to attach a ppt file with sound. Those of us who do not have MS Office cannot test this without a sample file.

Here is a sample .pps file. The sound works on a relatively generic lucid (Ubuntu 10.04, 64-bit) machine, does not work on maverick (Ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit).

@Tony
Rename the extension from pps to ppt. That will make it editable.

What kernel are you using? It would be great if this issue could be resolved by a simple apt-get dist-upgrade.

@Andre
You say sound was broken. Was that all sound, or specifically just the sound in pps files? If is was just the sound in pps files, can you tell us how you installed the kernel-specific alsa-driver update.

pps files play with music in 10.04 using kernel 2.6.32-26 and OpenOffice.org 3.2.0

After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 with kernel 2.6.35-22 ALL sound was racing and fragmented. A bug was lodged and Daniel Chen advised to download the nightly snapshot of the alsa-driver relevant to that kernel. That fixed the sound - except for the login sounds. With the release of kernel 2.6.35-23, sound was again racing and fragmented until an alsa-driver update was released for that kernel. The login sound works intermittently now, the opening drums do not.

OOo is version 3.2.1 build 9505.

pps files play but no sound.

The alsa-driver modules were installed via: # apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)

I recently dist-upgraded one of my 10.10 machines that won't play sound for .pps/.ppt files. This did not fix the problem. Note that my problem is not the same as Andre Mangan's -- sound works perfectly with every other application I've tried (VLC, firefox flash plugin, system sounds, etc..).

Next I'm going to try uninstalling the Ubuntu open office packages and installing the .deb's from openoffice.org. I'll start with 3.2.0 to see if the problem is just an Ubuntu issue. If this doesn't work, I'll try installing 3.3.0 rc8.

My sound works well for Ubuntu in general (I mean Rhythmbox, VLC, etc.). I met the same problem with ppt/pps file.
I'm currently trying to answer the following question on the same topic (in French) : https://answers.launchpad.net/openoffice/+question/138957

I try the attachment of Patrick Goetz by three ways.
Openoffice on Ubuntu 10.10 : no sound !
Openoffice on Windows : the sound plays well during the whole presentation.
MS office on Windows : the same result.

To conclude, I mark this bug as confirmed

Version used for the previous tests:
Ubuntu : 10.10 (upgrade from a 10.04 done in november)
Ooo on Ubuntu :
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)
ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1
Windows : XP
Ooo on Windows :
OpenOffice.org 3.2.0
OOO320m12 (Build:9483)
Microsoft office on Windows : 2007

Changed in openoffice.org (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

Following a number of experiments with pps and ppt files, I have found the following:

1. Opening a pps file in edit mode (ppt), shows a blank field for "Sound" under the Slide Transition tab.

2. Using a ppt file, I can specify a sound file in the Slide Transition Tab in LibreOffice Impress 3.3 rc2-3 and this will play after pressing "Slide Show".

3. Saving the ppt file as ppt will loose the entry for sound and it will revert to a blank field.

4. Saving the file to odp format retains the specified music entry and the presentation will play with sound after activating the "Slide Show" button.

Thank you for this information, but I can tell you that in many cases
sound plays it depends perhaps of the file itself because I have Lucid
and openoffice from Ubuntu 10.04

Please read the entire thread of a bug report before commenting with random noise. I clearly stated in the very first comment that THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM IN LUCID. pps/ppt files which play perfectly in Lucid do not work in Maverick.

Perhaps it is particular to this file because the Mozart file works well.

Seems that this is probably a regression in alsa-driver in Maverick since:
a) Using a newer version of that is reported to fix it.
b) It was reported to work in Lucid but does not in Maverick
b) Libreoffice 3.3 on Windows plays the sound fine but on Maverick does not.

Would appreciate input from someone who knows more about sound

Any solution?

Yes. What I did was install Virtualbox using Windows XP as a VM. Then it's a simple matter to install either Powerpoint Viewer or Powerpoint. This works perfectly, but it seems rather silly to me to install all this machinery just to be able to get sound with powerpoint presentations!

This bug #680560 is marked as "also affects" libreoffice debbugs #587204.
debbugs #587204 is marked as duplicate of debbugs #612940.
debbugs #612940 is marked as fixed in libreoffice version: 1:3.3.1-1 (23-feb-2011).

My distro is Ubuntu maverick 10.10.
I installed through ppa the libreoffice version: 1:3.3.1-1
I confirm that debbugs #612940 is fixed.
But debbugs #587204 is still not fixed. So this bug #680560 is still not fixed

I do not know how to re-open debbugs #587204.
Can somebody help?

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.

What can I do? Thank you very much!
