Bug Description

After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 I noticed that I'd loose my wifi connection unpredictably. This never happened with 10.04. I'd revert to Lucid but there are several improvements in 10.10 that I enjoy. Sometimes it happens as soon as 10 minutes after connection and sometimes I can stay connected for hours with no issues. Hard ethernet connection works just fine. At first I'd reboot the machine to regain connectivity but then I discovered that all I had to do was rmmod and modprobe the r8192se_pci module. Thank you for your help!

I'm now running mainline kernel 2.6.37-rc2 with the current Realtek driver. The driver I had been using under the Ubuntu kernel from the repository was 2.6.0015.0127.2010. The current driver from Realtek is 2.6.0018.1025.2010. I'll run this for another day or so and let you know if there are any random connectivity lapses. So far so good.

I've been having a hard time testing this issue under the mainline kernel as there are some other, unrelated stability issues. The random wireless connectivity drops, unfortunately, do seem to be happening still. One big difference, however, was that I was no longer able to successfully reload the driver as a workaround. Under the mainline kernel when I rmmod && modprobe the operation just hangs indefinitely.

One thing I didn't mention in my original post: it seems that the connection only drops while idle. I haven't had problems with it dropping mid-download or while streaming radio. It does drop sometimes while watching streaming video though. I don't know if this happens during or between buffering events.

Is there something else I should test?

Thank you for your help,

William

I've observed something similar, along with a serious regression between the 2.6.35-22-generic kernel and 2.6.35-27-generic.

When I boot with 2.6.35-22-generic, the wireless is mostly usable, and I can often fix it simply by turning off and then back on wireless networking in Network Manager.

With 2.6.35-27-generic, however, it is much worse. After a fresh boot, the network stops working when simply opening my web browser (which typically is restoring 30-40 tabs). And then toggling wireless doesn't seem to fix it, either.

When I have problems in 2.6.35-22-generic,I'd see trace like this in the system log:
Mar 11 12:23:26 purcell kernel: [ 465.663870] ===>rtl8192se_link_change():ieee->iw_mode is 2
Mar 11 12:23:26 purcell kernel: [ 465.720728] =====>rtl8192_set_chan()====ch:1

Mar 11 12:23:27 purcell kernel: [ 466.978247] =====>rtl8192_set_chan()====ch:12

but often the problem resolved itself reasonably quickly, so it was mostly usable.

With 2.6.35-27-generic, however, I also see lots of lines like this:
Mar 11 12:12:01 purcell kernel: [ 255.633584] rtl819xSE:No more TX desc@1, ring->idx = 0,idx = 0, skblen = 0x44 queuelen=0

Sometimes the set_chan messages might be interspersed with the above like this:

I upgraded to Natty in hopes that issues with the realtek driver would be resolved. Unfortunately, the intermittent connections persist. I have now switched to using ndiswrapper with M$ Windows drivers. I now have no problems with my wifi connection. The problem seems to lie with the native linux driver.

Thanks Jose and William. But some people have kernel lockups and this is my workstation. Having a working machine is way more important than WiFi =P. Nice to know that on 11.10 this will be fixed.

Until 11.10, I can use wired cabes. =)

William Ray Yeager, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I am no longer using Ubuntu. But I believe the problem was caused by using
wicd instead of NM. On earlier versions it was possible as much as i
remember.
