Bug Description

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04 and the laptop (Sony VIAO VGN-SR53GF) doesn't resume from suspend. The disk LED does constantly light, but nothing comes back on screen. It used to work perfectly prior to the upgrade. I have to do a hard boot to bring the system up.

This also affects me, on an Asus eee-pc 900. After suspend, I get a black screen, and the computer is completely unresponsive. It requires turning the computer completely off and a cold boot. The computer has suspended perfectly under previous Ubuntu versions.

This also occurs booting from 2.6.34.020634 kernel, which worked without issues with 10.04.

I have the exact same problem on my Packard Bell Easynote RS66-U-320NC after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10.

According to below thread in the forum, so does a lot of other people with various systems including stationaries.

Hope to see a fix soon, it is incredibly annoying to do a coldboot all the time... :O)

Same here on an IBM Stinkpad T60. 10.04 would suspend/resume for months on end. 10.10 resume leaves me with (in no particular order, it's random):

1) a completely black screen
2) bounced back to a terminal complaining about hot-add adding a device that's already added
3) xscreensaver login - completely hung and only a magic alt + shift + sysreq + k will unlock it.

This is desperately annoying as we're trying to push ubuntu in our enterprise. Things like this, dual screen being broken and vpn being broken really compromise our case.

Confirmed on an IBM Thinkpad SL500 with Ubuntu 10.10. Just a blank screen after suspend/resume. It Seems that the system is not even entering the suspend mode correctly.

A working fix seems to be turning off the wireless-switch of my laptop and turning it on after the correct resume.

But still annoying. Indeed.

Installing the package "hibernate" fixed the problem for me. Saw it here: http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1596545&page=3

Same regression for me with a Sony Vaio VPCS13M1E, but after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04. It broke suspend to ram functionnality, I just have a blank screen and the laptop does not go into suspend, I have to force a reboot of the machine with the power button.

The exact issue of suspend resume is back in 11.04. I had done a fresh install of 11.04 on the same Sony Vaio as in the original post.

Balwinder Sodhi, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

I recently installed latest 12.04 LTS afresh on the same system for which I had originally reported the issue. The issue is still there. However, before installing to hard disk, I had tried the suspend resume via live session and it worked. Unfortunately, after full install on hard disk the issue came back again. I've removed 12.04 LTS from my laptop now and back to Squeeze.

And yes, one more thing that I noticed is that my laptop heats up to much higher temperature with Ubuntu than Debian Squeeze for same usage pattern. This heating up issue has been there since 10.04 LTS.
