Bug Description

Problem:
The 10.10 server RC cd does not boot on my IBM x3650 M2 server.

How to reproduce:
Burn the Maverick amd64 server Release Candidate image to a CD. Insert the cd on the cd-rom drive of a IBM x3650 M2, boot the server from the cd.
A black grub window will show up, instead of the ubuntu language choice menu. Clicking on the "install" option will display the message "error: cannot allocate protected mode pages" "you need to load the kernel first" (screenshots attached)

Further information:
The 10.04 server cd worked fine on this machine when I took the same steps.
I booted a desktop with the same cd and checked it for defects. No problems found.
I checked the md5sum of the image

I found something on http://<email address hidden>/msg15081.html, this bug may be related with grub and EFI.

Problem remains after release. Even tried installing 10.4 and running "do-release-upgrade -d", which works fine until I try to reboot.

Hey guys... is anyone there? I find it a big issue that the CD does not boot on a mainstream, modern server from a major manufacturer.

Ok, got it to work by booting it with Lucid (10.04) cd and then upgrading with "do-release-upgrade -d". Please disregard comment #2.

I still can not boot from the Maveric (10.10) cd.

This also affected my X3550 M3 server. I could get it to boot by creating a bootable USB driver, but the CD did not boot. As Daniel M says, "I find it a big issue that the CD does not boot on a mainstream, modern server from a major manufacturer." Yup.

As the messages in the image are highly likely from grub2 and appear to preceed the linux kernel booting, this could well be a grub2 issue. Opening a grub2 task as well for visibility.

In reply to "missing required logs", there are no logs to be produced. The os does not boot or produces any logs to be seen, so I marked it as confirmed. Sorry for the long delay, I was checking this out as I am preparing to upgrade to Oneiric (11.10) (did not test the oneiric CD yet, though. That will require some downtime scheduling.)

Can you please test this again with 13.04? This sounds similar to an issue that was fixed somewhat recently.
