I trust this will be fixed regardless as thermal sensors server a purpose otherwise manufactures would not use them. If these sensors provide reliable readings under Windows, which I presume they do otherwise gamers would complain bitterly, then they should be working under Linux.

Comments like "This is a AMD specific upstream bug and it will NOT be fixed, since 95% of AMDs thermal sensors give the wrong value." are unhelpful. If this is the case, then it needs to be fully explained.

On Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I get the following error message with an AMD Phenom 9600b quad core processor on an Asus M2n68 - AMSE2 motherboard.
"unreliable CPU thermal sensor; monitoring disabled"

I receive no error message using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS 64 bit (kernel 2.6.32-27) and the system works great. (Incidentally I also have no problems with the sensors using windows 7)

I hope this will be looked into and I feel comments by Martin Langsholt to be particularly unhelpful....."This is a AMD specific upstream bug and it will NOT be fixed, since 95% of AMDs thermal sensors give the wrong value."

If the sensors worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04.1 but don't work in Ubuntu 10.10 then the matter should be looked into. I'm just wondering if any possible damage could be done to components if this is not fixed?

Same issue as everyone else. However the problem only started on my machine after installing a Zotac GT 430 Graphics card.
I am using a PE-AM2RS740G2 Motherboard with Phenom x4 9450e Processor.

Looking at this thread it does seem to be an AMD issue. (Has anyone seen this problem with an Intel CPU?). Given that all I did was install a PCIe graphics card it makes me wonder is the AMD thermal sensors are sensitive to power supply noise / poor signal layout on the mother board.

If that is the case then the Thermal Monitoring service should be able to filter the readings to average out the noise.
Is there any app I can use to monitor the temperature sensor?
And if all else fails how do I disable this feature altogether?

Supplying "force=1" to the module does suppress the disabling - as in, it loads, and you get a temp out of it.

It might be unreliable, but it seems OK to me.

I suspect it's a little overzealous.

hhlp, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Well , AMD claims that the Temperature is indeed unreliable and SW should not use it, that's why k10temp disables the monitoring.
See http://support.amd.com/us/Processor_TechDocs/41322_10h_Rev_Gd.pdf#74

the easy fix is to do:

Icreate /etc/modprobe.d/k10temp.conf

and just add

# force k10temp module to use the processor temp, even if it's unreliable
options k10temp force=1

and it will work the same as before.
