Bug Description

I'm currently using Lucid on my Netbook (Compaq CQ10) with the rt3090sta module for wifi. This works really great, never have any problems.
Since Maverick development started I've been trying out Maverick and it always gave me problems with wifi. I cannot connect to any network, it keeps asking for the password. Sometimes I can connect (in less than 1 second it's connected) but my trackpad stops working. And once in a while it just works all the way it should.

When I unload all modules that involve the ralink card:
rt2x00pci
rt2x00usb
rt2x00lib
rt2800pci
rt2800lib
rt2800usb
rt2860sta

And load the rt2860sta or the rt2800pci module again, my laptop hangs.

Is this due to the fact that I actually need a rt3090sta driver for maverick? Is my network card incorrectly identified?

Confirmed also on MSI U230, it's only possible to establish good quality link connection in a near Access Point area, say 2-4 meters. Anywhere outside this area I get asked about the password configuration, and this happens despite the WiFi status icon indicating 100% link quality.
Also after removing all rtxxxxx modules and loading manually build rt3090sta module is freezing the MSI netbook.

There is a pretty simple workaround:
Create a file named: /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci-disable.conf
And set the contents to:
blacklist rt2800pci

Hopefully, this will help other affected users until a real fix for this issue is provided.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . On a eeePC 1000HE, wireless stopped working part way during the upgrade to 11.10 and did not come back; ifconfig showed no wireless interface, lshw -c net showed the device as UNCLAIMED.

I just rebooted and chose kernel 2.6.38-11-generic instead of the latest/default kernel (3.0.0-12-generic), and wireless is working again, like it did in 11.04.

Frank Groeneveld, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
