Occurred on a system that was yesterday upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 (that was first installed with 9.10, both previous versions were perfectly stable though). System is a Toshiba NB200.
I'm going to find a external hard-drive to copy stuff over and reinstall from scratch, hopefully that'll work ok.
