Bug Description

I've got Maverick on a Sony Vaio M111AX. In Lucid, I was able to suspend, in Maverick I'm not.

Early versions including the Maverick Beta would successfully terminate my X session, and then init would try to switch runlevels and crash after only one or two steps had been displayed in the text-mode console. With updated packages since the Beta, Gnome's menus disappear, but the system crashes with the desktop image still displayed.

This seems like a power management issue, but I'm not sure.

WORKAROUND: Adding this to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

blacklist rt2800pci
blacklist rt2800lib
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00pci
blacklist rt2x00lib

Hah! I finally found it! It's one of the rt2x00 modules. Adding this to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

blacklist rt2800pci
blacklist rt2800lib
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00pci
blacklist rt2x00lib

Allows my laptop to successfully reboot, shutdown, hibernate and sleep.

Looks like maybe the system was stalling for ever waiting for the rt2800pci bits to do something.

Blacklisting them seems to fix it!

Same problem.
MACHINE: VAIO NETBOOK VPCM120AB

With Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid: OK.
With Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick: doesn't shutdown, or hibernate, or restart.

I'll try the blacklist adds-on (but, I'll have to find out the proper way to do that... I guess I will. Always learning. In Dago, we thrust. ;^P).

Later, I'll send the report.

Thanks anyway Gabriel. Nice bug-shot.

Gabriel M. Schuyler, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
