Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

The drive is functional in Lucid but in Maverick it is detected by the kernel, but not made available to userspace. Advice on IRC indicates that this is likely a udev bug.

Just found that this affects me too on 10.10. lsusb shows my external My-Link DVD drive as the Genesys, just as others. I can mount it manually with 'udisks --mount /dev/sr0'. I am using an EeePc 901 (and the same happens on my Dell laptop 1557, 10.10). Thanks.

Same problem here. Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (as Linux Mint 10, 64-bit), external CD-RW in USB case. From lsusb:

Bus 002 Device 012: ID 05e3:0701 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 IDE Adapter

When connected, drive spins up, but then nothing. Data disks can be mounted via 'udisks --mount /dev/sr0', but no luck with audio CDs. Fix would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I, too, have this similar issue with Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 IDE Adapter, ID: 05e3:0701 not being seen by the system when plugged in. I am unable to burn cds or dvds to this unit (a Kangaroo cd/dvd burner) because it is unrecognized by the system (Maverick 10.10 - updated to all patches as of 12-15-10).

I can mount a data dvd by issuing the command: udisks --mount /dev/sr1; and can read/copy data from the disk. Cannot burn however. I have tried several different DVD creating packages from Ubuntu and none can see the drive.

Several persons have reported that their drives worked well at 10.4 but have since quit working. I cannot verify this since I have only recently moved from Mac OSx to Ubuntu because of hardware operability issues there.

A working solution to the problem is greatly appreciated by ALL!!

Thank you for your time and effort in tracking down the solution we so desperately need.

It's not clear whether some of the last few posters have the enclosure that gives you 'ID 05e3:0701' from lsusb - which is what the bug nominator has - but this problem is not going to go away by itself. I'm disappointed (a diplomatic understatement) that this bug remains undecided and unassigned. There are plenty of people out there with the ID 05e3:0701 device who are affected by this bug and the thread I linked in #2 continues to grow. This one:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1618085

I have also responded in other threads on Ubuntuforums about the same ID 05e3:0701 issue where the OP has not contributed to the linked thread. This ghastly device seems to be an insidiously common one. The fact that it works in Natty (so far!) is not a reason to neglect it in Maverick.

I have the same problem on 3 different machines running Ubuntu 10.10 x64, kernel 2.6.39.1.

The symptoms are: the cd or dvd in the drive is shown in nautilus, but attempting to open, mount, or eject it sends a dbus error message, "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending." Ejecting a disk manually works, but afterward gparted won't start, and disk utility shows a blank window. I've googled trying to solve this problem for several days, and am glad to have finally found this thread now.

Each machine has 1 cd/dvd, each used to work in ubuntu 10.10, and each continues to work in alternative OSs (mac os10.6.8, windows 7x64).

On 2 systems, older installations of linux also work. The drive is fine as I write this on one of these machines after booting into ubuntu 10.10 kernel 2.6.38.3, udev 163. (I'll update this when I check the udev version on the failing system).

The working system shows cd-rom mounted on sr 7:0:0:0: , while the failing systems show the cdrom pointing to sr0 (to be updated).

If any of you find a work around (other than using an old kernel, which I'm not sure will work on the broken systems), please do post.

Thanks,
Matthew

Installing 11.04 did not help, changing to more recent 2.6.38 kernels did not help. For some reason 2.6.39.2 will not install on these machines -- some dependency is not upgradeable. I mention all of this to help with debugging.

Hello, I have exactly the same problem as in comment #24 - in short, cannot mount any cd/dvd. System always sends "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending." On the other hand, all SD cards or flash disks works. The DVD mechanic that doesn't work ,is internal on notebook HP 4520s. Cannot tell you the details now, when I run lshw it gets stuck on "scanning scsi".

I run on 10.10 x86-64, currently using kernel 2.6.38-02063808

Funny enough, when I try kernel 2.6.39 or 3.0, the problem is gone (just don't stick with them because of ATI drivers and some issues with wi-fi).

Ok, solved - reaction to #26 #27 - the optical drive stopped working also under higher kernels (i.e. 2.6.39, 3.0). For some unknown reason, the optical drive was disabled in BIOS. Why??? Have no idea, I haven't touched bios for more than a half a year. There is also no automatic bios update as to my knowledge. Now it' s back to normal. Hopefully this helps to someone.

Same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. i found this workaround:

1) Insert USB connector
2) Issue this command (not as sudo, just as regular user)
$ udisks --mount /dev/sr005e3:0701

To dismount/eject, simply unplug the drive. I am also asking Canonical support to validate this/provide another workaround.

The above command can then be set as a shortcut. Not ideal, but it works.
