Bug Description

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545) fails to hibernate with an up-to-date Maverick installation. Hibernation worked in Lucid, but has not worked for at least the last 1-2 months that I've Maverick installed. When I hibernate, the display changes and eventually displays a message referring to "atombios" being stuck in a loop before the computer turns off. When I try to resume from hibernation, the display is garbled, and is completely unusable, so I have to force a restart. On restarting, Apport appears in the notification area warning that a serious kernel error occurred.

Same issue here, except the error regarding the looping atombios means that the computer never shuts down. It hangs on the text until I force a restart.

Same as Chris, but with HP G62-222US. Worked in Lucid, but broken in Maverick.

Seems as though recent updates have resolved this (to a degree). My HP 6730s now hibernates and resumes successfully, but the atombios error messages are still visible so it doesn't look great.

Can anyone confirm the updates have resolved this issue?

Inspiron 1545 is Ubnutu-certified: see http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/200910-4252 . I have one which works mostly. After booting, it does not suspend and the Power Management Preferences application does not show the General tab, only the "On AC Power" and "On Battery" tabs. But after this app is run once and closed, running it again shows the General tab, and closing the lid suspends the computer.

I bought the laptop from Dell with Ubuntu 9.10 pre-installed. Apparently different units for the same laptop model have different hardware:

My 1545 had this problem with 2.6.35-22. It got much better with updates 23 and 24, but it's still not perfect. Now it *usually* hibernates, but hibernating takes longer than it used to with Lucid, and sometimes it still hangs during hibernation.

On my Inspiron 1545, hibernate / resume work much better in Natty-- better than Maverick, and probably also better than Lucid. Resume from hibernate in particular is much faster and smoother than it has ever been. Time required to hibernate is also quite reasonable. Maverick would fail to hibernate every so often, hanging instead... but I haven't seen any such issues in Natty so far.

Phil Bull, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
