Bug Description

X no longer starts when using linux-image-2.6.35-20-generic (2.6.35-20.29) but X starts when using
linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic (2.6.32-24.42)

I am using the free Noveau drivers.

Hi Robbie,

I was trying out the Unity interface but it failed to start. I subsequently removed it, since I was trying to diagnose what the issue was. It turned out to be a kernel issue. I have not yet re-installed Unity to try it out again, as I felt that this bug was too important.

I have never tried the Nvidia drivers on this machine -- I am loathe to install non-free drivers.

The point is:

with linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic (2.6.32-24.42) the nouveau drivers work

with linux-image-2.6.35-20-generic (2.6.35-20.29) the nouveau drivers do NOT work (as far as my initial debugging has done).

I am happy to perform any tests anyone throws at me.

It must be very new - since repeated apt-get updates && apt-cache search's
are not showing it as available yet.

I'll check in another hour.

OK - still an error (BADSIG on the Release file).

This will have to wait until Monday unfortunately.

I don't think so - my system does not display the GDM greeter or anything
subsequent to it.

I hear the startup noise of GDM but plymouth (the Ubuntu logo) remains
onscreen.

tried with 2.6.35-22.33; no change.

I noticed this in the X log file:

[ 12.064] (II) Initializing built-in extension GESTURE
[ 12.068] (II) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
[ 12.068] (II) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 12.068] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
[ 12.070] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so

No idea if this is related.

Please let me know if there is any further things I can test out.

Thanks,
Anand

Your logs attached are from a boot with 2.6.32, so they're of limited debugging use. Could you manage to collect logs (with “apport-collect 640432”) from a boot with 2.6.35?

You should hopefully be able to switch to a virtual terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2, F3, etc).

Failing that, the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log (it'll probably be Xorg.0.log.old) from a boot with 2.6.35 and /var/log/kern.log would be useful.

Ok. So, from your dmesg logs there it looks like the nouveau kernel module is wedging. Do you remember the last kernel that worked? If you can't remember, or haven't tried any other Maverick kernel, you can download previous kernels from https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/linux

OK - sorry that I've been unable to update this bug.

I have four kernels on my system (currently).

kernel | attempt 1 | attempt 2 | attempt 3

2.6.32-24-gen| good | good | good
2.6.35-19-gen| bad | bad | bad
2.6.35-20-gen| good | bad | good
2.6.35-22-gen| bad | bad | good

The only reason I even tried multiple boot attempts was when I was writing down 2.6.35-20 and 2.6.35-22 I wanted to re-confirm that the results I had. And they differed.

Let me know if I should try any additional kernel versions.

Hey Anand,

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also run 'apport-collect <bug-number>' while running natty, which will add fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team to look at.
