Bug Description

Steps 1:

1.1) Download ubuntu-10.10-beta-desktop-amd64.iso
1.2) Make a startup disk on a flash stick from the downloaded ISO using Startup Disk Creator
1.3) Boot from the flash on ASUS G51JX-A1
1.4) Select "Try Ubuntu" at the prompt

Expected: Gnome desktop loads and works fine
Got: Gnome desktop does not load

Steps 2:

2.1) Download ubuntu-10.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso
2.2) Repeat steps 1.2 - 1.4: Gnome desktop does not load
2.3) Repeat steps 1.2 - 1.4, except in step 1.3 use DELL INSPIRON E 1505 instead of ASUS G51JX-A1: Gnome desktop loads and works fine

Note: The earlier version (ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso) works fine on ASUS G51JX-A1

Hello yuri
Is this reproducible with the latest build?
If yes, at the first screen when you select to try Ubuntu, hit F6, hit Esc, delete quiet and splash, hit enter two times.
Loading will start in verbose mode, look at it and tell us where it fail.
Thanks
Fabio

Hello Fabio,

I tried maverick-desktop-amd64.iso released on 09/12/10
Sometimes it would hang in the middle (I didn't write down where exactly).
Sometimes it would boot, I could hear the logon sound play, but the display would be garbled, I could not see anything.

Could be a video driver problem (video card is nVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M)

I'll try the latest build again, and this time I'll write down where the boot fails.

Thanks,
Yuri

Hello Fabio,

Attached are the logs from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20100918/maverick-desktop-amd64.iso

The display was garbled, but I was able to switch using Ctrl+F1 and get the logs.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Thanks,
Yuri

I can confirm that this bug also exists for me on an Asus laptop with an Nvidia 360m card. Gnome loads, and I hear the sound play, but the desktop is garbled. I am unable to switch to any tty's to gather any logs. Tried using multiple usb sticks and verified their integrity multiple times.

I have tried installing 10.10 using both the final beta build and the RC build downloaded on October 2nd, both produce a block pattern that is black and white and unchanging. I'm guessing the noveau driver is hosed up in some way, sorry I can't be more helpful. Has anyone been able to successfully installed 10.10 via disc onto a laptop with a GTS 360m?

The bug still exists.

Confirmed for 10/10/10 release - shows purple Ubuntu boot screen, then goes garbled, unresponsive when video mode would normally switch heading into X.

Using ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64.iso (This is the ISO I got when I selected 64-bit - not sure if there's a non amd64 ISO intended for Intel chips.)

I was able to boot this image http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20110423/natty-desktop-amd64.iso
from a USB drive on ASUS G51JX-A1 laptop. Here are the steps:

1) Download the ISO image: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20110423/natty-desktop-amd64.iso
2) Prepare a USB Flash drive for use with Start Up Disk Creator (format it or simply delete unwanted stuff)
3) Run Start Up Disk Creator as a super user
  sudo usb-created-gtk
4) Before pushing Make Startup Disk button make sure to enable "Stored in reserved extra space" option. This option will only be available if you run Start Up Disk Creator as a super user
5) Make the startup disk
6) Reboot from the created USB drive
7) IMPORTANT: when Ubuntu boots, hit any key (SPACE BAR for example), select the desired language
8) Hit F6 and select "nomodeset" option, then hit ESC key
9) Chose Try Ubuntu and hit ENTER key
10) When Ubuntu boots in low-resolution GTK mode, open System->Ubuntu Software Center
11) In the Ubuntu Software Center search for "nvidia" and chose NVidia binary X.Org Driver (version 185)
12) Install the driver
13) Reboot, repeat steps 7), 8), 9)
14) Ubuntu boots from the USB Flash drive in the hi-resolution Unity mode.

When Ubuntu is released on Apr 28 I will try the steps above and if Ubuntu boots in the hi-resolution Unity mode I'll try to install it on ASUS G51JX-A1 laptop and report back.

A correction for step 3): Instead of sudo usb-created-gtk run
  sudo usb-creator-gtk

The released ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso does not boot from flash drive with the noveau driver. I had to go through the steps described earlier to be able to boot from flash to hi-res Unity mode using nvidia glx driver.

After installation from the flash and rebooting the display stays garbled. So before I could work with 11.04 I had to do the steps below:

1) Reboot after installing ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso from the flash drive to the hard drive
2) At the grub prompt select Recovery Mode
3) At the next prompt select netroot (drop to root shell prompt with networking)
4) from the root console,
  apt-get install nvidia-glx-185
5) Reboot again

After these steps 11.04 boots from the hard drive to the hi-res Unity mode.

yuri, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
