Bug Description

The following steps currently cause a hard lockup on my system while using the 'Maverick' development version of Ubuntu.

Note: At first, lshw-gtk starts up and begins scanning, then crashes. Then a few seconds later my system is completely locked up and I have to press the hard reset button to reboot.

1) In gnome-terminal enter the following command: gksu &

2) Then, in the gksu dialog box enter: lshw-gtk

3) Enter in your password thereby giving lshw-gtk permission to run with root priviledges.

i recently compiled and installed the maverick 2.6.35.2 kernel on a server running jaunty. i believe that i am encountering the same (or a very similar) issue. when booted with the new kernel, the server hangs with a kernel oops when lshw is run, apparently while probing the Framebuffer device. i have attached the console output. please let me know if there is other useful information i can provide.

thank you for your time and effort.

I have the same problem on Maverick beta, and it's can be reproduced on a VMware machine:
How reproducible: always
How to reproduce:
1. Download Maverick beta ubuntu-10.10-beta-server-i386.iso from
    http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/download
2. Boot it on VMware machine (mine is VMware workstation 7.1.0 build-261024)
3. Choose "Try Ubuntu", then open the terminal, become root by "sudo -i"
4. Run: lshw -businfo -class network
5. Then it shows me: "Killeduffer devices"
and I can see the kernel oops by running "dmesg":
