Bug Description

When booting 2.6.32-24 my onboard network card does not detect a link and is not initialized. Both lights are fixed on. During the boot the CPU jump on 1 core to between 30-100% pulsating in about 2 second rhythm and generating continupously a load of about 2.

System performance is severely degraded with frequent relatively brief freezes and very sluggish response.

Booting in 2.6.32-23 works perfectly normal.

I tried with the latest mainline kernel and this works fine.

pti@pti-laptop:~$ uname -a
Linux pti-laptop 2.6.32-02063217-generic #02063217 SMP Tue Aug 3 09:10:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

AFAICT the symptoms only happen when using 2.6.32-24

I experience exactly the same behaviour from my T61.

The previous kernel 2.6.32.23 works fine.

Same here. I've also got an Lenovo T61! How could I help "to zero in on that bug"?

btw I am using a 2.6.32-24-generic kernel -64bit.

I have the same issue on a Lenovo T61p. I am running a fully updated 10.04 which has kernel 2.6.32-25-generic. I also tried rebooting with the older 2.6.32-23-generic kernel as Karl suggested, but that did not solve the issue for me.

Issue:
CPU usage by events/1 spiking rhythmically every ~4 seconds (in kernel mode)
This causes severe stutters in GUI, audio, and video.

Other symptoms:
Both Ethernet LEDs are solid on even though there is no cable plugged in (normally these are both off in this case).

Work around:
"sudo ip link set eth0 down" seems to immediately stop the CPU spikes. They start again when eth0 is set up again. This does not have any affect on the LEDs which stay solid.

I upgraded to 2.6.32-25 and the problem dissappeared for me.

To summarize : -23 is Ok, -24 has High CPU rhytmically pulsating, -25 is Ok again.

I've had very similar problems with my lenovo x61 Tablet running 10.04. I've tried with 2.6.32.-21, 22, 23, and 25, and same event/0 or event/1 CPU spiking (and networks LEDs on the whole time since the "Starting Up" message, right after choosing the kernel we want to use in grub.

I can only use wireless: Wired network doesn't work anymore and the "Wired Networks " menu always displays "Disconnected" and is greyed out.

typing "sudo ip link set eth0 down" stops the CPU spikes as well.

I believe I found a solution to this problem:

You must fully power OFF your computer to clear this error state. Reboot/restart and sleep are NOT sufficient.

I was able to get my Ethernet port working normally again by shutting down, unplugging AC adapter, and removing battery for a minute. When I brought the machine back up after this Ethernet port was working normally again and has been for some time now.

Before hitting upon this solution I was able to guess that this was some kind of hardware bug because my Ethernet port still didn't work even if I rebooted into Windows Vista (i.e. it was specific to Ubuntu or Linux).

I suspect that all the people above who reported switching to a different kernel solving their problem may have done a shutdown and that is what "fixed" their issue rather than the different kernel itself.

Hope this helps anyone else coming here with the same problem.

Powering off, and removing the battery for a minute worked for me as well (My wired network is back and no more CPU spikes due to event/0)
Thanks a lot David !!!

Peter Tillemans, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

This bug has not reappeared on any of the kernels since then...

it was very specific in the -24 patchlevel, it was not present in the -23 and dissappeared in the -25 and has never returned....

I guess this can be closed and filed under 'Job well done'
