Bug Description

My Ubuntu Lucid freezes completely at what seems to be random occasions. Somewhat more likely while playing a video or playing Battle of Wesnoth. The freeze is total and I have to reboot by holding down the power button.

A look at the 'kern.log' (attached) suggests it is a kernel bug.

I'm running
Linux sinkpad 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:22:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
on a IBM ThinkPad G41.

I have the same bug for all 2.6.35.xx kernels (i386 and amd64). But with 2.6.34 is ok. My system: notebook Asus UL30A - ULV SU2300

Well, I tried the PPA packages solution from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes
and so far so good (10 hrs of working). I tried launching the same videos as before and it seems to work OK now.

I'll give it some more time to crash again and keep you posted.

Unfortunately despite installing the fixes the freeze happened again.
Log entries look different though (attached is part of kern.log).

Michal Bojanowski, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

My laptop that caused the troubles described in the bug report is now "decomissioned". I cannot further debug it.

Thanks
