Can you test the mainline kernel to see if the issue exists upstream? You can see how to test it here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds

Also, does the brightness change with the brightness applet? Try adding the brightness applet to your panel and changing the brightness, so we can see if it is a backlight issue or a hotkey issue.

Hi, it's hotkey issue (despite of that the keys e.g. for volume works), the change of brightness in Power manager (KDE4.5) is possible

The kernel 2.6.32-16 doesn't help, I will try more bleeding-edge kernel and report here.

I have the same problem, switch to text console doesn't help. With fglrx hotkeys works fine.

@Icek: it seems that the bug has nothing to do with fglrx, since Tommy_CZ also have fgrlx, and yet his hotkeys doesn't work.

I can confirm this defect and add the following information.

Without using the proprietary driver (ATI/AMD FGLRX), the brightness UP and brightness DOWN pop up the brightness window but DO NOT alter the brightness. I can alter the brightness via the gnome applet

If I use the propietary driver then the buttons do not work and I cannot alter brightness via the gnome applet.

Tommy_CZ, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the results of following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
