Bug Description

Kubuntu 10.10 alpha 1(fully updated 2010-06-29) AMD64:

Linux saturn 2.6.35-6-generic #8-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 28 04:15:52 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Booting with the 2.6.35-6 gets immediate stuttering and looping from the startup sounds. Processes playing sounds hang and will cause KDE to fail to shutdown. Booting any previous kernel produces flawless sound. There do not appear to be any related messages in the logs.

Problem seems to go away when using pulseaudio.

Completely removing pulseaudio (because it only works with my headphones) and going back to ALSA causes the problem to return. But still, only for the -6 kernel. Earlier kernels work fine.

Same problem with -7. I must boot -5 or below to get working sound.

I have the same audio hardware (ALC889), and the problem occurs with 2.6.35-22. Worked fine on Lucid.

Should add:
alsa-1.0.23; same hanging issues on shutdown; using the server image with KDE installed over the top; no related messages in system logs.

Can confirm that PulseAudio with ALSA works fine.

This workaround straightened out my audio, when using straight ALSA (no PulseAudio):
- install the gstreamer bakcend for Phonon (phonon-backend-gstreamer)
- change Phonon backend to use gstreamer in System Settings

I've removed myself from this bug. The problems I had using pulseaudio have long been fixed, so I wouldn't know if the original problem even exists in the current kernels.
