Bug Description

=== Problem ===
Just close the lid of my netbook and wait until it suspends.
Open the lid and wait for it to power up. The machine is running but no backlight. I can "see" that something is on the screen.

=== Workaround ===
After digging through the forums I found a workaround: just change the brightness with Fn+F3 or Fn+F4.

=== Upstream Testing ===
Fixed on 2.6.35 6/15/10 daily/current Mainline build.

=== Debugging ===
Suspending from console using pm-suspend works normally (backlight comes back on after resume).
If the lid-close setting is changed to "Black screen", the lid can be closed and re-opened and the backlight comes back on at as expected.

=== Additional Information ===
The strange thing is that this didn't happen with 9.10 or 10.4 (updated from 9.10). I had to reinstall the machine (broken HDD) and this started to happen.
I saw similar reports but not quite the same.

Please test with the current mainline kernel [1]. Installation instructions are here [2]. Also please test with the xorg-edgers packages [3]. Installation instructions:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo apt-get upgrade
To revert: 'sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers'.

Also see if the problem still happens when suspending from text mode [4].

Hi
Just tried with the daily build and it works. I had to switch back to 2.6.32-22-generic because of wireless drivers issues.
At least the problem is consistent, because when I boot with 2.6.32-22-generic I can reproduce the problem.

From the console I can pm-suspend and resume. I have to remember that this only happens when it enters suspend when closing the lid.

Since the begin I suspect that I reported the wrong package, but I had no clue on what package to choose. it seams now to be a kernel issue?

If I can manage I'll make a clean install just for debugging this issue without messing up my working environment.

Do you mind opening up System->Preferences->Power Management and changing "When laptop lid is closed;" form "Suspend" to "Black screen"? Then restart and close the lid and re-open it. This should see whether suspend is an issue or if it's just a lid-close problem.

OK.
With the black screen option works.

I went a bit further and tried hibernate. If I hibernate closing the lid it's even more strange:
I boot, I can see the normal console messages then the backlight goes off. I hit the key combination to change the brightness and I have backlight again.

Hello. Is there any chance of resolving this in 10.04 (LTS), e.g by backporting the fix from 10.10?

I have a Compaq Mini 110c-1100CA. I have to use fn-f1 to suspend before closing the lid (a tip that I'd found on a forum) or fn-f3 or fn-f4 after re-opening the lid to turn on the back-light (as noted above). It becomes tedious after a few months.

Still, I would prefer not to trade this annoyance for all the reported issues with the new Netbook Edition user interface, Unity, in 10.10. The Netbook Edition interface in 10.04 works OK for me except for this issue.

Thank you in advance for considering these points.

As a workaround (or a complete solution?), is there any way to change the signal from a "lid closing" event so that the system receives a pure fn-f1 key-stroke combination (either by changing the lid-closing signal that is generated at the source or by intercepting and changing it before it gets to its destination)? Once the system gets a pure fn-f1 from lid closing, presumably it would wake up with the back-light on as if the user had pressed an fn-f1 on the keyboard. Just an idea.
