Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Dell E6510 with an Intel Core i5 chip and with the Intel graphics (not nvidia). According to the Dell website, the Intel chip is: Intel QM57/QS57 NB Gfx - Intel GMA HD

Vanilla install of Ubuntu 10.04 (I tried it with 32bit and 64bit versions) with all patches applied (up to date as of posting).

Upon plugging in an external monitor using the VGA adapter and then going into System->Preferences->Monitors, I get a black
screen and no mouse movements at all. System is completely hung - I cannot even SSH into the laptop. Even CTRL+ALT+BKSP doesn't kick me out of X. I'm forced to power off the laptop and restart.

System has latest A03 bios but it did the same thing with A01 and A01.1 bios revisions

Thank you for reporting this problem. Could you try and run this command in a terminal before you plug in the external monitor and upload the resulting file (udevadm.log) here (after you reboot)?

udevadm monitor --property > ~/udevadm.log

Hopefully, there will be some clue to what is going on in this file.

I ran the command before plugging in the vga cable, but after reboot the file is empty (also on the Latitude e6510)
Is there a workaround to use a beamer without the laptop locking up?

I can confirm that the problem also occurs with kernel 2.6.35-7. I see that the bug is still unassigned, is somebody looking at it?

Corona, most bug reports will never be assigned to anyone. After screening and finding the most relevant symptoms, we report in to the upstream developers who then look at and hopefully fix the bug. Then the fix is pulled into ubuntu, either by a regular driver update or a patch.

This bug report is stale, since the original reporter has not answered by request in comment #1. If you can reproduce this in Maverick, Corona, it is better that you make your own bug report. For graphics related bugs, we only want input (on syndromes etc.) from the original reporter, since different bugs may have the exact same symptoms. It is also way easier to communicate with one person than having many people throw in their findings.

I'm marking this bug as Incomplete, since the original reporter has not responded.

I just checked in after a while, but I do not know what happened. I went through the entire bug process and posted it here a while ago, but for some reason it's gone. I won't have the time to test the above for a while as I am really buried with a number of items. This problem still exists and I will try to reply at a later time. @Corona, please continue with your bug as it may get the proper resolution if you can follow up with the requirements. Thanks!

Could it be due to this same bug that Dell E6510 dies to the black screen when it's attached to the projector? Only solution is to hard reset the device.
