Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Easy as the summary. I'm using ubuntu 10.04, Mouse pointer is not visible, but it still works. Indeed, it's possible to reach the upper-left corner and display the menu.

There is always an ongoing discussion about this problem, whose link is https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/108987

Here's what I did.
1) Just upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5;
2) Rebooted, entered password on the login screen. Most of the time pointer is still visible;
3) Ubuntu login sound played untidy;
4) Gnome desktop as always but no mouse is visible. Mouse still works, but pointer not visible.

There is a temporary work-around: use the command
$ lshw -C display

This makes the pointer to reappear, but just until the next reboot. Here below the output of the command
  *-display UNCLAIMED

Hm. Does adding “blacklist vga16fb” to the kernel command line make the pointer work for that boot? We had problems early in the 10.04 development cycle which got triggered by the interaction of vga16fb and lshw -C.

Please give that a try and post your dmesg log.

Now way: still the same problem.
And here's to you. There are two "dmesg" coming from two differents boot: one with "blacklist vga16fb" in the command line and another with the very same, but coded in blacklist.conf.

I noticed two other things:
1) It's not the command "lshw -c display" itself to make things work: even "dmesg > dmesg.txt" get mouse pointer back;
2) It's the last kernel and the last xserver-xorg update coupled together to mess up the pointer. I mean: this computer lived well with 2.6.32-23 alone, but it was the latest xserver-xorg released two days ago to make things bad.

Proof of the pudding is that everything is fine with 2.6.32-22 kernel.
