Hi starslights,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This is almost cirtainly a userspace application which is tickling the deprecation error. The error refers to a userspace process touching a file the kernel intends to remove. We need to work out which userspace application this is and move the bug there.

Ok. I have tried to add reporting on what userspace process is using these deprecated files. Could those of you could try booting these test kernels and report back here. Please include the diagnostic lines from your dmesg. Kernels are at the URL below:

andy,
i can confirm this issue on kubuntu 10.04 amd64, running on a compaq cq62.
AMD Athlon(tm) II P320 Dual-Core Processor

Linux 2.6.32-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20 14:21:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

i've tracked it down to the default settings in powerdevil, the kde power managment service settings.

for the performance, powersave and presentation profiles, the default cpu frequency scaling policy is set to dynamic (ondemand).

after changing each of these settings to dynamic (conservative), the error message is no longer reported. change back to dynamic (ondemand) and the error is reported.

hope this helps in getting this one resolved. pls advise if more info required.
cheers

Closing this bug with Won't fix as this kernel / release is no longer supported.
Please feel free to open a new bug report if you're still experiencing this on a newer release (Bionic 18.04.3 / Disco 19.04)
Thanks!
