Bug Description

Binary package hint: amsn

The norwegian charachters øæå can not be typed into an amsn chat.
I'm guessing that this also affects other languages.
This is a regression from Karmic

I have tried wiping the .amsn folder with no success.

Met this problem on another computer upgraded to lucid too, but for some reason I deg dependency problems here. The downgraded amsn packages depend on libgssdp-1.0-1 and libgupnp-1.0-2

No reason for such a bug to be introduced in a new version of aMSN.. can you check if the aMSN upgrade introduced a change in the tcl/tk version installed ? I'd guess the issue is a badly compiled version of tcl/tk or something like that.

Andreas Noteng (andreas-noteng) wrote :

This happens on all lucid computers, both upgraded and fresh installs. Strangely this is not a problem on my computer, which has English as default language.
This is a major show stopper for newly converted users. I have convinced a lot of non-tech people to ditch Windows in favor of Ubuntu recently, but since the included msn client is really really really lousy, amsn seems to be the best option.

@kakaroto: Don't think so, because downgrading to the karmic packages helped, without changing tcl/tk

Like I said, it doesn't make sense.. downgrading to 0.98.1 could have fixed it maybe because it uses tcl/tk 8.4 instead of 8.5 or the contrary,. or maybe one package had a patch that changed 'wish' to 'wish8.5' in the amsn file... Or maybe you use some input method that fails to work properly...
anyways LocutusOfBorg clearly showed a screenshot of it working, you seem to be the only one with the problem and I'm guessing you are doing something wrong.. and like I said, aMSN has ZERO CODE for handling that, it's all tk, so it's not aMSN, it can't be aMSN and it can't be a bug from one version of aMSN to another.

Actually there is a patch changing wish to wish8.5 (IIRC), i'll try to remove it tonight and see what happens. As i said, this happens on all lucid installations with a Norwegian interface. I can write the norwegian characters on computers with a non-norwegian interface. All i've done is install ubuntu, and apt get install amsn.

Couldn't get amsn to build with tk8.4, but I see now that the karmic amsn package was also built with 8.5.
Do you know of some way I can test to see if this is an error in wish and not amsn?
The only changes I can find in the changelog are related to sound and upnp.

the ./configure checks what tcl/tk you have installed locally, you'll have to not only install tcl8.4-dev and tk8.4-dev, but also run update-alternatives to make amsn's ./configure detect 8.4...
either way, like I said, whether or not in the changelog, aMSN has nothing to do with that.. even if we wanted to, we couldn't.. all we do is receive keystrokes from Tk.

Gianfranco Costamagna (costamagnagianfranco) wrote :

@Andreas, the best way is to build amsn with the new libs in a 9.10 machine and find if tk is really responsible for this.

Or maybe Andreas please download tcl/tk from source, just build them (not install) and run amsn source with ./configure --with-tcl=/home/yourname/Download/sources/tcl8.5/unix --with-tk=/home/yourname/Download/sources/tk8.5/unix or something like this

If you get an error when launching amsn (and launch it from bash) go to the amsn build directory and try wish ./amsn or wish8.5 ./amsn
after this you will build an amsn version with the latest tcl/tk with no ubuntu-specific patch (maybe a patch breaks the chars)

ok, so I guess it's an ubuntu bug present on the norwegian version... maybe try one thing though.. go to amsn preferences, then appearance, then change encoding, and select utf-8.. it should be the system's default, but maybe it's not, that's why it fails.

If this doesn't fix the problem set the status back to new
