Bug Description

The laptop will perform normally until you issue a suspend command either through the menu or by closing the lid. The machine will attempt to suspend, the screen will blank and the LEDs will flicker until it hangs up with just the suspend "moon" icon flashing. When I boot back up I notice that network-manager has disabled networking for some reason, this always happens after crashing when trying to suspend. I have tried suspending with networking disabled but it did not help.

WORKAROUND: A simple work around for this issue is to remove the SD or other media card from the internal card reader on the front of the laptop.

Hi Dustan,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have tested with the Mainline Kernel 2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201005081426 as well as the updated Ubuntu Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic that was available today and both still have the same behavior when I attempt to suspend to ram or disk.

Launchpad Bug #550479 has also been triaged and I feel we will find they are the same bug in the end and perhaps should be merged (there are other ThinkPads in that bug as well, like a T41).

As reported by another poster in bug #550479 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/550479/comments/9

A simple work around for this issue is to remove the SD or other media card from the internal card reader on the front of the laptop. I had forgotten I had an SD card in there (it's never been an issue before) but sure enough I removed it and was able to suspend/resume perfectly.

I'm running both Lucid (v10.04) and Jaunty (v9.04) and have similar symptoms on both. My hardware is a Lenovo Thinkpad X61-tablet (7764-CTO).

On suspend:
** screen darkens
** LEDs blink
** rarely do I get a complete spin-down [see note 1 below]
** "new moon" LED left blinking (power off reboot required)

On wake:
** GRUB menu appears normally [see note 2 below]
** LEDs blink
** option 1 -- kernel panic
** option 2 -- system boot but X11 and network are not use-able (power off reboot required)

NOTES:
1. It would be wonderful if suspend had reasonable logging. I know this is a sticky problem,
but so is guessing about what is going on and going wrong.
2. It would be wonderful if GRUB was aware whether there was a suspended system out there.
Diagnostically, that would tell us that we got some part of a working spin-down. (It would also
help avoid the snafu where you suspend OS-A then boot OS-B with the suspend pending.)

Cheers,

My T500 went from suspending pretty well at the start of the Maverick cycle to incompetent right now.

Kernel 2.6.35-22 works when I hit the power button and choose suspend, but locks up with the flashing moon when I close the lid.

Kernel -23 locks up with the flashing moon for both button and lid.

-24 works when I hit the power button, but is very unreliable with the lid (closing the lid works maybe once out of every three attempts, the other two result in the flashing moon)

The latest -25 doesn't even attempt to suspend, either by power button or lid. It just locks the screen. I have to power it off whenever I want to move it. It's painful.

I don't have an SD card installed. Hope this helps discussion towards finding a fix.

Dustan Ashley, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
